I want to hear from others that work in a career that they are passionate about. What is it that interests you about it? How long did it take to discover your passion? Are there any tips/advice that you could offer to someone who has not found the right career yet?

    Rosie,

How old are you?  What have you tried so far in terms of work and things that you are interested in/passionate about?  What have you learned about yourself from that?

    Start there.

Hi Rosie I’m not sure what you mean by the word ‘passionate’. Its my opinion that the ‘self help and becoming’ movement have created a lot of unnecessary angst by creating unrealistic ideals with regards to passion, purpose and meaning all of which are connected.

I like what Joseph Campbell said about Passion or Bliss “People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. (Passionate Life) I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances with our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.”

The experience of being Passionate for career or what have you is just that a experience that exists not as a object to hold by a moment of being to experience. In a given day, week or month if we expect to the Passion for what we do in every moment were going to be disappointed. To a large extent we are the stories we create. as such having a Passionate career is a choice.  This has been my experience. There have been moments that I dislike what I do for a job and moments when I feel very passionate about what I’m doing. I am greatfull for the moments I experience passion for what I do.

I like the quote that you have posted. I have been in other job positions, apart from the one that I am currently in, that have brought me greater fulfillment. I feel that my lack of fulfillment in my current career relates to me not being true to myself in some way. I would really like to enjoy the position that I am currently in – I get paid decently, have decent hours, and actually work in my field – but something is missing.  I am bored. I get the feeling that this experience exists in order to teach me something. I do not have many responsibilities and therefore get left to my own thoughts. I used to spend the majority of my day browsing social media, but I have since realized it was distracting me from something I have yet to realize.

It sounds like you just need more challenging work. Go seek that from your management.

You could also seek something more fulfilling outside of work.

Work really can be about just paying the bills, it doesn’t have to be a super mission based thing.

Even when you do have a job you are “passionate” about, that doesn’t mean it will always be fulfilling.  I love my job but there are days when I feel very frustrated, down, and negative.  It might be helpful to think of why you started that job in the first place and what contribution your role plays in the overall organization, etc.

Mark also gave good advice.  Talk to your manager about getting some more challenging duties.  As a manager I have very much appreciated it when people told me they needed something more to do! 🙂
