Hey all!
Hope you’re well!
I’ve been feeling like there’s no purpose at all in anything lately. Its killing my motivation and I’m having trouble showing up for work or meeting my deadlines. I’ve felt this way in the past also a couple of times , the first time lasted 2 yrs or so and resolved on its own, but I was able to push my self then and get things done. I feel unable to do this now. The second time lead to a career change and I felt there was purpose in things for a few months, and now I am back to feeling this way again. Someone pointed out to me yesterday how bad the first career change looks on paper (and here I am considering the second!). How can I be productive and stick to things? I don’t want to mess up this second job also!
Thanks for all your help guys!
Best,
M

How did it (the feeling that there is no purpose at all in anything, and lack of motivation) “resolve on its own” the first time?

We rotated in departments where I was studying so I was meeting new people learning new things every couple of mths. There was always something to be excited about so I think that kept me out of trouble for a while. Now there’s nothing to be excited about or to look forward too.

Sorry to hear you are feeling unfulfilled. Personally I don’t think that there is any problem with changing what you do many times, if you are able to. It sounds like you are searching for something you haven’t found yet, and that is a purpose in what you are doing day to day. Work can become unsatisfying when you either reach your potential/learn everything you can in that role. I am/have been having a similar experience with working life, in that I keep working in jobs that I feel are pointless. It has taken me years to realise that I need to work in a job that I feel is making a difference in other peoples lives rather then a cog in a machine that to me feels pointless. I guess it is a case of looking inside yourself and thinking about what you truly need/want in life to make you happy, which is by no means an easy thing to do. Maybe consider what it is you wish to achieve in your career, is it to make lots of money, is it to be the best at what you do? Or are you working in something that you don’t really like that much but feel like you SHOULD be doing, rather then what you truly WANT/ENJOY. If you could be/do anything, what would you say? Dig deep and try to think of what you truly desire, and then believe it is possible. It is cliche, but we do only get one life, and you don’t want to force yourself to stay in a career because it may look bad on paper to change to something else. Keep looking for what you truly want to do, there are no rules to life. I hope this helps 🙂

So the first time, what motivated you (following a time of lack of motivations) was “meeting new people learning new things”. That happened because of a change you did not create: high school was over and University started. The second time you created the change by changing careers.
Thing is you are afraid changing career that time was not wise, am I correct? And you are afraid changing it yet again will not be wise either. Is it unwise?
But you need “meeting new people learning new things” to motivate you. Question is how to do that without changing your career, if it is unwise. I don’t know about meeting new people, but it is possible to learn new things while still in the same work place, doing the same job. Learning does stimulate me, it keeps me going. And so, what can you learn where you are, interacting with the same people, doing the same work?

Cara, I really believed that about my first career change! But I’ve come to think maybe the problem is something else. I asked myself what my dream career looked like and imagined it, then I asked myself if I would be satisfied if I had those things, and the answer was no, I would still be bored and restless. I think I’ve been looking at my career as a way of resolving inner conflicts, like I’ll finally be happy when I find the perfect fit but I don’t think that will happen until I deal with my inner state.
Anita, there are things that I can learn at this job. I’ve been preventing myself from settling into it and trying to learn those things. I think maybe SMART goals will help me here.
Thanks, you guys!

You are welcome. SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Assignable, Realistic, Time based.
I wonder if a goal like “resolving inner conflicts” which you mentioned in your last post, can be resolved SMART. Maybe if it is taken on one little piece at a time (Specific), and if you decide on a Measurable expectation, such as being aware of feeling content five times a day, and so on with the rest (ART).

Well, if you’re going to change careers, now’s the time to do it. You’re young. No one is going to fault you for seeking your niche in your twenties.
Now, I also wouldn’t seek fulfillment from your job alone. It is great if your job IS your purpose in life! But sometimes your job is there merely to make you going after your PURPOSE… POSSIBLE! You know what I mean? Your meaning could be in making money, or making money can be just a TOOL for fulfilling your MEANING. (And sometimes why we’re here has nothing to do with money at all!)
