    Hey everyone,

During these uncertain times, i have tried to read books and gain more and more knowledge. It has been wonderful reading again and closing the mind to all the chaos that is going on in the outside world.

I have read some beautiful books on Buddhism, mindfulness and meditation. I am a complete newbie in all these sectors however, are there any books you can recommend to help me see the beautiful word of spirituality and learn more about helping myself?

    Thank you

    x

Hi Soul-searcher – I have read many self-help and Buddhism books over the years but recently I came across two books that have really helped me to come to terms with my traumatic childhood. They are both by Pete Walker ‘Complex PTSD’ and ‘The Tao of Fully Feeling’. Even if you don’t think you are suffering from PTSD, Pete Walker explains that anyone who has been through a traumatic childhood suffers from it to some extent.

I also highly recommend Louise Hay’s books. I have gone back to her books again and again. For me she is the Queen of self-help books.

Have you read any of Eckhart Tolle’s books? I would highly recommend those as well. You can watch his talks on youtube. I think he is definitely an ‘enlightened being’.

Hope those help and happy reading.

The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying by Sogyal Rinpoche

The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer

    Untamed by Glennon Doyle

The Impersonal Life by Joseph Benner

I would also recommend reading through the books on Hay House’s website and just seeing what speaks to you. There are many wonderful authors there.

Books are a wonderful place to start learning. There are also many good videos on youtube. However, nothing will replace a teacher, sangha and the Dharma.

I love the Tibetan Book of Living and Dying too.  That book really stands out to me as well. I did read Louise Hay as well, and her books were very beautiful.  I know I feel at my best when I listen to recordings of guided meditations.  I live in the country and am not easily accessible to classes though a number if years ago, I studied 2 different types of Budhism – Tibetan through classes and a Japanese branch called Soka Gakkai which was in a group which met weekly. Part of the the focus of the second group was chanting. Then they would have some formal learning, and then informal discussion and friendship.  For a while we were also doing Mandela art together which was fun and relaxing.

I liked Philips Simmons – Learning to Fall: the Blessings of an Imperfect Life

Now I find myself in late August, with the nights cool and the crickets thick in the fields. Already the first blighted leaves glow scarlet on the red maples. It’s a season of fullness and sweet longings made sweeter now by the fact that I can’t be sure I’ll see this time of the year again….

From our first faltering steps we may fall into disappointment or grief, fall into or out of love, fall from youth or health. And though we have little choice as to the timing or means of our descent, we may, as he affirms, “fall with grace, to grace.”

    Hello,

I find any books by Pema Chodron or Thich Nhat Hahn very helpful.

Pema’s “Welcoming the Unwelcome” is fantastic.

The Bhagavad Gita is a sacred text in yoga training.

In terms of racial justice and real ideas for healing, just fyi, Resmaa Menakem’s My Grandmother’s Hands is absolutely mind-blowing.

    Namaste!

Hi soul-searcher. I started my spiritual journey four years ago. “Conversations with God” by Neale Walsch totally changed my life. It’s all about having the freedom to talk directly to God and hearing his voice clearly. I am currently reading “A Return to Love” by Marianne Williamson. AMAZING book and great author. Every page is a new revelation for me regarding love as it relates to relationships, career, etc. If you want something poetic, read “The Prophet” by Kahlil Gibran. I also have started a blog called http://www.myvastman.com. My blog posts reference different books I have read.

    • The Road Less Traveled by Scott Peck (psychologist’s view on life, love and spirituality)
    • Karma Yoga by Swami Vivekananda (free online and on youtube. It’s a short book about learning to live in a way most beneficial for our higher selves, not about physical yoga exercises)

Books are a great resource but all they can do is point you in a certain direction, give you a few tips on how to deal with life on your journey, and help you see the bigger picture one piece at a time. However, learning to apply your new knowledge to everyday situations is where the real work is.
