I’m considering a major career change. I work in public health and am thinking of becoming a yoga instructor. I suffer from mild-moderate clinical depression, though, and worry that it could inhibit my ability to fully commit to the practice. I also worry that I wouldn’t be a good enough teacher because of it. Yet, I feel a calling to make this career pivot. I’ve loved yoga for more than a decade and feel this is a good path for me as I’ve struggled to find meaning and purpose in my life. Any advice?

    Dear Moll:

I suggest that you consider the financial aspect of making this career change: if you are giving up a regular, reliable income for an irregular, unreliable income, or a far smaller income- that may aggravate your depression.

Everyone needs a sense of stability, a world we can depend on. Having a regular income is part of that much needed stability. A significantly anxious and/ or depressed person needs that stability even more.

Therefore, as you consider your passion for yoga instruction, consider also, the stability factor.
