Recently, I’ve avoided comparing myself to others, or mentally stopping myself from doing this, and just accepting me doing my best is enough 🙂 It feels a lot better.

I’m just wondering/hoping to start a discussion on people’s thought and opinions on this topic in general. Can comparing yourself ever be helpful (ie self improvement ect), or is it ok to just try your best? What things do you usually compare yourself to others over (how social people are was a big one for me)?

    Dear M:

I like your topic. I used to compare myself to others (with unfavorable-to-me  results) in the following areas: my looks, my grades in school, popularity (lack of, that is), income (later on in life), relationship status (not having one, mostly), wealth/lifestyle. These come to mind at the moment.

Not helpful to me, not at all. Harmful, really. For one thing, I had a distorted view of others, believing they are doing well, when in reality they probably didn’t do as well as I thought. Often people believe that because a person is smiling at a photo that they are happy, sort of always-smiling. People assume that wealthy people are happy, that popular people are confident people, and so on. Lots of assumptions I made, lots of assumptions people  make are not true to reality, therefore the comparing process is flawed, based on distorted reality.

Dear M, thank you for sharing! I am glad that you find a peace of mind in stopping yourself from comparing to others. I used to (and at times I still do) compare myself to others and it gets tiring. It does take courage to fully accept yourself for who you are, even when you are comparing yourself.

Usually what you compare with others on is an area that you are not too good in. I usually compare myself to others in terms of achievements and social. 🙂 After doing some work on myself I have managed to reduce my comparisons with people internally by a lot. Hope it is going well for you too!
