Tiny Wisdom: Let Go

“If you let go a little, you will have a little peace. If you let go a lot, you will have a lot of peace.” -Ajahn Chah

It’s hard to feel peaceful if you dwell on why you should be angry. If you want to feel free, let the story go.

It’s hard to feel good if you feel like you deserve to feel bad. If you want to feel happy, let your self-judgment go.

It’s hard to feel satisfied if you feel like everything needs to be perfect. If you want to feel content, let your perfectionism go.

It’s hard to feel balanced if you like you need to be busy. If you want to feel centered, let the pressure go.

It’s hard to feel relaxed if you’re clinging to fear or anxiety. If you want to feel at ease, let your worries go.

It’s hard to feel loved if you mistrust everyone else. If you want to feel connected, let your suspicions go.

It’s human nature to cling to things that don’t serve us from time to time. But every moment is a new opportunity to let go and be free. Take a deep breath and let go.

Thank you for sharing. Sometimes we can have a conscious desire to let go but really have a difficult time doing so. Hypnotherapy and meditation really help with this. As a hypnotherapist I help people let go of the past every day and move on into peace and joy.

How wonderful it is to “let go,” to dismiss anger, frustration, anxiety, guilt. Thanks for the reminder.

Today I kept thinking to myself: “when is enough, enough? When will I really let go of the past? What does “letting go” look like?” and on… after reading this it just really dawned on me that it’s as simple as taking a deep breath and choosing to let go. Very powerful and freeing! Thanks for posting!

Thanks, this is one of the main things I need to work on being one of life’s great worriers! Learning I can’t always be in control of every outcome and that sometimes I just need to step back is really hard. Your words really helped. 🙂

    Hi Jana,

There’s actually a whole category of the blog devoted to letting go: http://dev.tinybuddha.com/category/blog/letting-go-blog/. There are posts on letting go of fear, resentment, anger, stress, and more. Depending on what in particular you’ve been holding onto, you may find a post there that will help!

    Much love,
    Lori

Lori i totally accept it that one should learn to let go..but u knw aftr readn ur posts i feel elated nd happy as though my fears my worries are gone…but dis is short lived..aftr sumtym  i forget these lessons and end up bcumin miserable again…hw do u keep ur lessons in ur mind evrytym in the face of problems and situations??

  34. Lori Deschene Avatar

    Hi Abhi,

I also forget these lessons from time to time. I think that’s only human nature! We are going to stumble occasionally, and we won’t always feel happy. I personally strive for progress—so instead of stressing about my inability to constantly remember these lessons, I focus on trying to remember them more often than not.

One thing that helps me is to focus on my breathing when I start clinging to things that don’t serve me. This helps me slow my thoughts and ground myself in the present.

    I hope this helps!

Thank you for this.  I have held tightly to my anger and pain following the discovery of my husband’s affair two years ago.  In punishing him, I have punished myself.  I was aware I was doing this, but my anger at him convinced me that he didn’t deserve forgiveness, even if it was slowly killing me.  I am trying very hard to put it behind me.  Feeling a little better every day.

  39. Lori Deschene Avatar

You’re most welcome. I know this can’t be easy. I’m so glad to hear you’re letting go and feeling better day by day.

  40. dailyzen Avatar

i totally agree. feeling positive and contented comes from letting go, not from holding onto things from the past.

  42. Lori Deschene Avatar

It somewhat depends on what you need to let go of. There’s actually an entire category on the blog dedicated to letting go: http://dev.tinybuddha.com/category/blog/letting-go-blog/ You might find a post here that will help!
