    Joe,

I totally hear you. As other people have pointed out these are completely normal feelings for your age.

If it’s any consolation people who are “balling” at 18 I’ve found many time were peaking early. By the time they were 30 many of these a-holes had terrible skin and an alcohol or drug problem. By the time they were 40 they were in a miserable relationship if not divorced and looked like hell.

What I got from this is that those who don’t quite fit in, who have to make an effort to find themselves and their community are MUCH better off. You make choices because they are right for you and discover where you should be and what you should be doing. This is a much better life. It’s harder in some respects, but early signs of aging, alcohol bloat, and drama-filled divorces are a lot uglier. Finding your way to a better life will leave you better off. Keep searching.

I would say go for it! Who needs to be around terrible co-workers on a daily basis? Especially ones that make you not want to go to work!

But also … seeing that I don’t know the whole situation — maybe think about what you’d be giving up when you move from the job you hate to the one you could potentially love. Is it more or less money? Benefits? Vacation time? Is it as stable as the other one?

I’ve been a full-time creative for some time now so I have such scant experience in the 9-to-5 so maybe don’t listen to me at all :.)

Great question! (And that’s awesome you’re a copywriter. I’ve studied copy as well — both when doing voiceovers and when writing for myself and other people — and it totally tightens up other writing.)

There’s a quote that I heard somewhere which really made sense to me and it goes something like this: I write to figure out how I feel. Some writers are obsessed with outlining before they start. I sometimes use that, but it’s usually after I’ve engaged with the idea by writing some passages. I’m not sure what I’m really thinking until I’ve written.

And I get the impulse to write when something has pissed me off in ways large and small. I have the thought and then grab whatever paper and pen are near and begin.

If I may suggest a book on writing? How to Write Funny has been so instructive. It gives you strategies to gets laughs. I write a lot of satire in my sketch comedy characters voices (both in video and in print) and even though I have a lot of experience with comedy and good writing, this book has been a recent guide to bump up the laughs even more. Sometimes having concrete structures around writing and help generate ideas.

Hey Lily — you’re so not. Sometimes people don’t want to hear the truth. It’s your truth and you must tell it :.)

It sounds like a big change.

One thing came to mind: how about being able to get other colleagues in your office? I guess that would be having a similar people working in your office as you had with your previous office. This way you can bring together this lovely community.

Starting your own thing is harder, but ultimately you can make it your own. Maybe changing office locations could be key, etc. You can make it cozy. You can create community. This is harder, but ultimately, you’ll own the whole thing and can reap the financial rewards. I just hung out with a fellow comedian the other day who talked about how she opened a salon in the Caribbean about 10 years ago. It was the hardest thing she ever did – to be isolated and to take on all that responsibility. But in the end she’s making more money than ever which gives her so many more options, life-wise.

    Hi there Lou,

I have slept alright using it at nighttime.

The Luminater article is helpful because some people ask me about it and can’t afford to buy one.

Thanks your the tip about keeping it at eye level. I don’t always do that.

And THANK YOU for checking out Mary Poppins. It seems like you’re on Youtube — I’m on there as well: youtube.com/laurenlogi. I’ll be posting on there because I know that some people just aren’t on Instagram.

My goal is to ultimately do some of the festivals in AU and eventually tour my standup. Lots to do in the meantime so getting over this SAD stuff is super important! Spit spot!!

These responses are so helpful. Thank you! For some reason I didn’t get the notifications!

Lou! — That’s such a great idea. I left the light on the other day by accicdent for longer than the recommended time … and I felt better. It’s good to know that others feel the same. I just snapped it on right now. It’s night but at least it’s something. I’ll try it for the morning. I have to use my computer a lot for work (besides from doing standup comedy I also create comedy videos — on Instagram @laurenlogi) … so do you know if it’s okay to use the light while you’re on the computer?

And thanks for joining this site just to reply. I really appreciate that kindness. Unfortunately I’m not in AU this winter … I was last winter and I hope to be next and then to go every year.

Anita! — it only happens during the winter. It’s like clockwork as soon as it starts to get grey outside.

Imomum! – I like how you frame the winter as simply a time to hibernate a bit more, as do birds. There is this part of me that likes the darkness somehow. It slowly comes on, almost lulling us to sleep and to make a deeper reflection into our lives. It’s helpful until it veers into depression which starts to make me feel really shitty, which is my profession makes it hard to function (it’s the kind of job where you’re rejected on a daily basis … )

Thanks for your interest in my standup — the best way to find out more is on my Instagram + website … feel free to reach out to my directly through those channels :.)

Wait …. what do YOU want to do? It should really come from your own creative impulses. People can make suggestions but it’s really up to you. Take the bull by the horns and do it!!

First of all, how incredibly brave of you to even admit these things happen to you. It’s the first step.

I’d say, step by step things can get better. It will be an ongoing process, but if you are both committed you can do it.

One thing I do hear form your writing is how much you are angry with yourself for how the relationship has evolved. You’re taking responsibility for what happened and are taking steps to heal … the next step is to forgive yourself (IMHO).

And … as is something I talk about a lot … try to make art around it? Even if you don’t share it with anyone. Writing, shooting some pictures or a video/vlog, might make you blow off some steam. I make comedy videos based on my sketch comedy characters and it’s helped me through a lot of healing!

Anita, that is a good idea. I am required to stay up north a lot, but I hope to spend some time down in Florida. It gets dark early, too, but at least it’s warmer.

Ideally, I’d be performing in Australia (I’m a standup) every January – February. That’s at least what I’m building towards :.)

I love, Imomum, how you shift your life to meet the seasons. I’m going to give that some thought.

I make comedy videos based on some characters that I’ve created over the years. This requires me to stay inside – a lot. I find a lot of computer time makes me more depressed, but my work requires it.

Going to sleep early is a great idea! I love hot chocolate. I try not to eat sugar, but letting myself eat a sweet actually helps. No wonder holiday treats are so sugary … we need the extra boost!

Thank you for all the suggestions. How I can help you in return?
