I recently read blinks of “How Emotions Are Made.” The author Lisa Feldman discarded the idea that everyone experiences the same kind of emotions. The labels we’ve assigned to our emotions (like happiness, sadness, anger) are a result of the culture and environment we’re brought up in.
And we tend to associate bodily changes (like smiling with happiness) and activity in the brain with it. Recent research found that maybe emotions have a wide spectrum and it’s not entirely possible to even comprehend the emotions experienced by others. We loosely use names for recognising them, but they might be a bad indicator.
Long story short: You definitely can’t know the mental battles that others are fighting. Apply a bit of curiosity and remain kind 🙂
