Hi,
I am working again after 12 years of Career gap. I am now starting to work in my friend’s company (small company) as a part time, as I have few home commitments and time constraints. Now after 12 years means, lot of technologies and way of working changed, I am trying to learn it and adapt to my current work. My friend said to me to take it slow, as she don’t want me to burden and stress myself with my job.
Few of my ex-colleagues also working in my company, they are working full time, and they had no career gap, so they are quick and good in their work.
Every day we have an online meeting to give our work updates. Most of the time, I feel bad about myself for not able to complete my work on time and doing my work with little progress only.
I can’t be able to contribute more time for my learning as I used to have tight schedule in my home for cooking and taking care of my kids and other works.
My Friend says it ok for the little progress, as she has long term plan for me.
I just feel struck with myself, without knowing how to move further in my work. I just don’t know, what to do further. Please help.

How lucky you are to work for a kind & understanding friend. I too was once blessed to have a friend like yours. They let me learn a couple of aspects of the job and once I was comfortable & competent added another aspect. He preferred that I took my time & did less, so that there were few mistakes and any that occurred were rectified quickly with no hint of censure.
Relax , enjoy your work & stop comparing yourself to others, that way you will become more productive & competent much quicker than being stressed & critical about your performance.

– you say that you have kids. Let’s say one of your kids starts school in Jan instead of Sept the year before. Her classroom peers are advanced in their studies and your kid is a beginner. Where would your focus be, as a mother: on how well her peers are doing and how less your kid is doing in comparison, or on the progress your kid is making every day (however small)?

It sounds like you’re being very hard on yourself. You have just started this part time role after a long break. You are still getting used to it. Please give yourself some time! Things do get easier with practice. Just do your best to learn the ropes and things will improve over time.
It is natural for anyone to feel anxiety going into a new position. Even more so after a long break. Accept the anxiety for the situation as it is and do not blame yourself. If you find yourself getting anxious, blaming yourself or comparing yourself to others take a short break. Get a cup of tea, go to the bathroom, breathe.
It’s a really big step going back into the workplace. Well done! You should be very proud.
Please give yourself a chance to grow and see how you feel in 6 months to a year. See if you think things are a good fit for you then?
Love and best wishes! ❤️🙏

Yes, sometimes i am being hard on myself. As anita says, I will treat myself as how I had treat my son when he had mild learning struggles in the past. After sharing here, I felt i am not alone. Thank you.

You are very welcome. Do your best to be kind to yourself, and you will perform better at work and elsewhere. Anytime you’d like to share more, here on this thread or in another you may want to start in the future (so to not feel alone), you are welcome to do so.
