A friend of mine insisted I watch “the secret.” It left a lot of questions in my head and was wondering if anyone has seen it and if you are a strong believer in what the film is about? It seems amazing what is discussed and I would like to know what some of you think…can we design how our lives are suppose to be and can our thoughts and beliefs predetermine if things will go good or bad for us in life..hmmmm I’m a bit skeptical.

I had a similar hesitation the first time I tried calamari. Others said it was tasty, but the thought “squid” and the giant monster from 20,000 Leagues popped into my head. I tried it, I mean, why not? It was a bit chewy, but tasted pretty good. I don’t order it for myself, too chewy. 🙂 To me, the secret is just like that. It has some good flavor, but a lot of it talks about the material gain… having a big house and fancy car and so forth. I’m more of a “let divine love flow through me” than a “make all my personal dreams a reality” kind of guy. Materialism is a dead end street, far too chewy (mental spinning). 🙂
The other parts and theories seem reasonable to an extent. Some of the ideas are tenable, supported by Buddhist knowledge or quantum physics. I’d personally take a dharma talk over pop spirituality though… deeper roots. However, it is fun to see how different people interpret reality, often we find there isn’t a capital T in truth.
With warmth,

I want to feel inspired and motivated in making the right decisions, hence the right choices. I have recently gone back to church after seventeen years, for some they might say just because you’re going to church doesn’t mean you will find answers or that you’ll become a better person, but I go to feel a sense of calamity and peace. I feel like I can talk to a higher being and since he is the knower of all good and bad within us I can vent…you are probably thinking why I don’t just do that at home but its just my preference. You have been advising me on my recent breakup and to be honest, you along with my close friends and others I’ve spoken too have helped me to turn a new leaf…I won’t lie and say I don’t still struggle, but I am starting to feel more at ease and peace with who I am and how I feel about the patterns I have so faithfully repeated throughout my life. I can’t thank you enough for the wake up call and tough love but I really think sometimes it helps. Can’t wait to see how my future will unfold.
July 23, 2013 at 6:14 am #39085MattParticipantLol, I didn’t mean to discourage, just giving my perceptions of separating wheat from chaff and so forth. 🙂
Here’s a video from Matthieu Ricard about happiness:
My current favorite authors on inner guidance are Thich Nhat Hahn, Chogyam Trungpa, Pema Chodron, and Brene Brown. Really though, its about what resonates with you! We’re all different with different tastes and preferences, making our inner intuition invaluable in deciding what’s right for us.
Namaste!
August 5, 2013 at 7:46 pm #39796David GoettschParticipantE, I wish i had a lot more to add to the conversation, but the entire premise of the law of attraction sort of goes against my belief structure. There is a level of strength in accountability, but to say that everyone who is suffering has created their own suffering, and everyone who is happy has created their own happiness with their thoughts alone is just too big of a stretch for me to make. I firmly believe we don’t control our circumstances, but we can control what we do with them. This means that you definitely can get the life you want, but it takes a heck of a lot more than firm focus of positive thinking.
Just my opinion. Sometimes bad circumstances happen, period. Sure you can see the good in it, and thats the power of perspective and optimism, but the bad circumstance still occurred. I know the argument can be made that the “Bad” circumstance was necessary for further happiness and growth, but I don’t buy into that all of the time. Sometimes bad things just happen. Its part of being human, it doesn’t always mean you willed yourself into bad circumstances and are dooming yourself to a fate of misery. More power to whoever believes in the law of attraction, not trying to dissuade anyone, just speaking my piece. Whatever works for you works for you, never let anyone else’s opinion become your own if it doesn’t agree with who you are as a person.
August 5, 2013 at 9:19 pm #39804EParticipantYes I agree on every level…I too sat through the whole film on the edge of my chair but then once reality sunk in i too had my own opinions…it’s good to have films that persuade us into believing that our thoughts and dreams can become a reality if we think them but as you stated it takes more than that…thank you for sharing.
