“Just because your pain is understandable, doesn’t mean your behavior is acceptable.”
-Steve MaraboliLet’s examine an all-important quality to living a healthy, happy and prosperous life; your Standards.
Merriam-Webster defines standard as;
1 a : constituting or conforming to a standard especially as established by law or custom
b : sound and usable but not of top quality2 a : regularly and widely used, available, or supplied
b : well-established and very familiar3 : having recognized and permanent value
4 : substantially uniform and well established by usage in the speech and writing of the educated and widely recognized as acceptable
I would like to specifically look at 3 as it is more applicable to your life and accomplishments. To begin by understanding your values, you must first understand and define what is acceptable in your life and what is not by taking a clear, honest and fearless moral inventory of your life experience, your actions and your social sphere.
Examine those things that you wish you had done differently, those situations where you had a voice in the back of your head screaming for change yet you may have conformed to the immediate, inherited standard or value. Examine these things closely and with honest intent to define your own set of standards from your heart, a set of standards for your ‘preferred’ and authentic self longing for fuller manifestation.
Let’s also be clear here on the definition of acceptable. Many dictionaries will infer that acceptable is equal to tolerable. I couldn’t disagree more. Tolerating behaviour or a lack of integrity is far from accepting it. Acceptance is the interweaving of thoughts, ideas and actions into the very fabric of your consciousness. Thus, be very careful what you define as acceptable as it finds its way into the core of you one way or another.
If certain situations or circumstances are not acceptable in your life then deem them as unacceptable! Set a standard of expectations for yourself from which you will not deviate. These standards must be NON-NEGOTIABLE. This is not to say you cannot be flexible when presented with a set of circumstances that challenge your standard, on the contrary; accept these challenges as a means by which you develop and galvanize an even greater or standard much like the greatest scientific minds in history, when their theories or ideas where challenged with a solid and irrefutable truth, had to head back to the drawing board and reformulate the way they looked at the original problem in order to redefine a new set of standards.
Maintain flexibility in the face of irrefutable truth, but do not compromise those standards that you define.
