Hello all, this is my first post. After being unemployed for 6 months, I found a job in another state. I am terrified that I am not qualified for this job. It has only been one month and I’m already feeling that I cannot do it and I will ultimately fail. Negative thoughts are overwhelming me to the point that I cannot even concentrate at work which is adding fuel to the fire. I am scared of disappointing my family if I cannot succeed in this job. I am scared that I will be unemployed again. I am lonely and have no self confidence whatsoever.
I just found this website recently and it has been very helpful. Can anyone add any words of encouragement or share a similar experience with me?

Like you wrote, your anxiety ” is adding fuel to the fire”, lowering your performance at work, the very thing you are afraid of. Remove that anxiety, and you will perform better. Easier said than done, of course, but think about it: if fear has a positive value in your situation, it would be to improve your performance at work, so accept a bit of that fear as okay and take deep breaths: the excess fear is harming you. It is not helpful.
You wrote: “have no self confidence whatsoever”- my words of encouragement: you do have some self confidence, sometimes, don’t you? Think about it and you will remember those times. Add to those times today by paying attention to what you do and when you perform well, at work or anywhere else, notice and congratulate yourself. This will improve your confidence and well-being.
You wrote that you are lonely- if you could be around people in some positive context, that will help you very much.

One thing that helps me when I’m at work when I am feeling overwhelmed is to stop for a moment and write down the most important things I have to do. Then I try to make a list of steps required to complete each thing. Then you can go and prioritize all the goals and steps. This way you can always be making progress toward something.
Also, perhaps some strategies to relax before work could help. I started to meditate for just five to ten minutes before work, just breathing as I listen continuously and try to stay present, and it can really help clear your head. I would recommend not doing it before work though for the first few times because it can be uncomfortable at first. Also, the flip side and keeping yourself occupied with something on the commute over and before work can help you go in with more confidence.
