This is my first post. I went through a difficult breakup with my fiancee of four years about 6 months ago. Since then, I’ve tried to find wisdom and comfort in Buddhism, particularly the writings of Pema Chodron. I don’t meditate as much as I should, but I always say I will.

Since the breakup, I’ve become nomadic – living in different countries and cities. I’ve made some romantic relationships, and they’ve all ended quickly because of this life style.

I feel comfort and safe when I’m with someone, and then I have to say goodbye. This causes me strong sadness and strength, and I’m tired of it. If everything is impermanent, and every relationship ends, there seems to be only two choices for me. Either I experience love temporarily and suffer, or learn to be alone and avoid that suffering.

Any advice or resources anyone can recommend?

    Dear Gregory Earle:

The options you came up with:

    1. Experience love temporarily and suffer.

    2. Learn to be alone and avoid that suffering.

My thinking: we live temporarily, therefore everything we experience is temporary. Suffering is a fact of life, but lots of it is preventable, avoidable. Therefore I would add another option:

    3. Choose the next woman wisely, settle down in one place, extend the loving relationship for a lifetime, and live wisely when alone and when with company.
