Good Day Everyone,
I am on a spiritual journey to a happier, healthier and more balanced ME. Currently a Grad student… but thankfully have the summer off! Now it is not an excuse to say that school got in the way of a healthy lifestyle… but it does help that i have time to work out again. I tend to fluctuate in weight, I know it’s not healthy… some years I weigh 20 lbs less… others… I gain a few… lose a few.. if I am stressed, I definite pack them on and am certainly an emotional eater. Currently in between my average weight… not at the higher end (THANKFULLY) but still, not very satisfied with myself right now, (physically).
I have made significant emotional progress in the last 6 weeks or so on some relationship issues, which I am getting by fabulously… I have been increasing my activity levels (hiking, jogging, home workouts, etc), I don’t have a gym membership… nor will I be getting one anytime soon. Therefore, I am thinking of alternative and more mindful ways of achieving the fitness levels I desire. I am not trying to be “skinny”, I am a happy curvy girl, I only want to be a bit healthier… and slightly leaner. My goal on this journey is more about my spirit and self-love. I want to know if anyone here practices mindful eating. Any tips, books, lectures they would be able to recommend? Any personal stories? I’d love to hear about it some more. I find that my relationship with food has improved in the last few years, I gave up alcohol almost 2 years ago, I’m approaching my 2-year anniversary next week, YAY! I could seriously use more help in the food/eating department.Any advice would be greatly appreciated. 🙂

You have a great goal and congrats on your success so far!
For eating, I got help from a nutritionist. It turns out not only what you eat, but when you eat what, is important.
I’m in a gym, but you can do something on your own or with friends. Search for Tabata exercise. You can do a lot in less than a half hour per workout.

June 16, 2014 at 9:12 pm #58966Nanette SteinParticipantHello there,
I have recently become very interested in Mindful Eating, myself. As I continue along my own Spiritual path, it has become more important to me to pay better attention to my health and well-being. I used to run 5 miles every day, eat a clean diet, and lost about 50 lbs. Over the course of the last two years, I have lost some dear family members and undid all of my hard work. To get myself back on track, I picked up three books that I am now reading: “The Zen of Eating” by Ronna Kabatznick, Ph.D., “Savor” by Thich Nhat Hanh and Dr. Lilian Cheung and a wonderful all vegetarian cookbook “A Taste of Heaven and Earth” by Bettina Vitell. I became a vegetarian a while back, but I’d say that it isn’t actually necessary to mindful eating. Mindful eating is more about recognizing why you are eating and paying attention to all sensations during your meals. “Savor” is a fantastic introduction to Buddhism, as well, though it is not a necessary part of your change, either. There just happens to be a lot to learn from Nhat Hanh outside of eating practice that will prove invaluable no matter where you are Spiritually. The best of luck to you. And remember to always be gentle with yourself, it is all happening as it should.

Thank you so much Matt, Big Blue and Nanette! I just got home from a lakeside jog, it was such a beautiful experience. I will look into those books, I am interested in Savor, that sounds like exactly what I am looking for. I am feeling extremely elated right now and this just topped it.
<3 Namaste.

Good luck! 🙂
