“We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms—to choose one’s own attitude in any given set of circumstances—to choose one’s own way.”
-Victor FranklFrankl exposed a facet of human consciousness that JK has made the focus of his 40 year career in Personal Development; Choice, not circumstance, will determine my destiny. JK has announced this on every continent on this planet, to professionals from a multitude of industries, and continued to teach that, when the Power of Attitude is accompanied by a Clarity of Purpose, a sincere and pure desire to manifest and a non-negotiable set of values by which you will live your life, then no obstacle is too difficult and literally anything is possible.
In Frankl’s search for answers he made it his life’s goal to help other’s find meaning and purpose in their lives. He researched ways and means to develop this sense of purpose for others and concluded that anyone can find a clear sense of purpose in the following ways;
Creativity or giving something to the world through self-expression;
Experiencing the world by interacting authentically with our environment and with others;
Changing our attitude when we are faced with a situation or circumstance that we cannot change.
It is amazing how you are able to choose your response to even the most atrocious circumstance. This is, perhaps, the most genuinely divine aspect of humankind. No matter what the circumstance it is your attitude, your choice of response, that will determine your destiny, results from the situation and your legacy left thereafter.
You cannot always control the circumstance. In fact, rarely will you ever be able to choose the circumstances with which you are faced, you are only a microcosm in a great sea of energy and organisms interacting with one another creating a long string of cause and effect results. The Universe outside of you is so vast, rich and mostly outside of your control except in your ability to influence it. It is my belief that their is an equally vast Universe within you, a vastness over which you most certainly have control. A vastness which you can utilize to influence your environment, the people, places and things around you, through effective action. Action is most effective when you have mastered your attitude; when your values clearly defined, what is acceptable and what is not, and your character refined to and defined by your clear sense of purpose.
This limitless Power within you, this potential, is easily observed in the role Attitude has played over the centuries. More opportunities have been lost, withheld, and forfeited because of attitude than from any other cause. Attitude is a more powerful distinction in life than beauty, power, title, or social status. It is more important than wealth and it can keep one poor. It is the servant that can open the doors of life or close the gates of possibility. It can make beauty ugly and homeliness attractive. Attitude is the distinguishing factor between a leader and a follower, between a creative mind and a prostrated mind, between the lion and the lamb.
Your attitude is rarely based on reality but rather based on how you think or feel about something; is an interwoven fabric of your self-esteem, your interpretation of value around you and your concept of your relationship between those two ends. Essentially, Attitude is the immediate and sequential manifestation of who you THINK you are. The lion and the lamb are reflective of this. While genetic design and social influence certain directs the flow of these creatures’ respective attitudes with great intensity, the result is what we are examining; it is not their genes, their family, their peers or the weather, each of which have significant influence, it is their atttitudes that determine their position in the animal kingdom, the physical realm. No matter how we dissect each influence, no matter how powerful the push in a certain direction, the result is that Attitude is the defining factor between a Leader and a Follower, a Lion and a Lamb.
Your human consciousness is capable of choosing that attitude regardless of your environment, a consciousness so advanced that it is not subjected to the same intensity of influence by genetic predisposition, social structure or environmental hazards. You can be cognizant of these influences and still choose another way. You can be aware of the potential dangers, feel fear, self preservation and other instinctual overrides yet still forge ahead because you are able to see that the potential good that may come of your choice and efforts is worth risking pain, suffering or failure.
Any outside influence that harms that sense of influence only does so because you’ve allowed it to do so. Your conscious belief in yourself is the ultimate deciding factor in your reslience, adaptability and will. No amount of training, no purity of genes, no amount of money, power, titles or promotions could ever compete with your own sense of significance and make you a Leader, a Lion or a Shepherd. I am convinced that absolutely nothing compares to your chosen response, your choice of Attitude. I hope you are convinced too. I hope you are inspired and adopt the Power of Attitude today.
