I appologise in advance for this rather long, rambling and rant riddled post but if I don’t explain my problem to someone then I’m going to explode!  I need some advice from people who aren’t involved.

My problem is basically that everything I do either goes wrong or I get totally the opposite of what I wanted/was trying to achieve.

My husband and I have been studying the laws of the universe for 10+ years now and we have devoted our lives to trying to live our dreams.

I understand about positive and negative emotions and belief and faith and for 10 grueling and difficult years I have tried to make the law of attraction and the law of manifestation work in my favour.

It all started when we were living far away from home and I was feeling very home sick and missing my family.  So we travelled back to where we grew up.  My father-in-law (to be as was then) invited us to rent his house and I was thrilled.  So we found jobs and moved back.

The house was a complete mess with no kitchen or useable bathroom, bis previous tenant had ruined it and done a bunk in the night.  But we had no choice at the time and he moved us in and charged us full rent.

When my mother-in-law left my father-in-law, he decided to sell the house and he offered it to us.  So, we contacted a solicitor who advised us that it was really not worth the price he was charging and to find somewhere else.

In the meantime our landlord grew nasty and we had to get out as soon as possible, so we hunted around for a place and found a nice flat in a convenient location for work.  We secured a mortgage and when we saw a mortgage adviser he told us to just sign everything that came through the post and not to worry about it.  I also took out an insurance against redundancy as I had illness cover with my job.

All was going well, we were feeling very ‘up’ and we were feeling very grateful.

    Then things started going wrong.

Just before Christmas I got back to my desk after lunch and found a redundancy letter.  When I spoke to my manager, she told me not to bother going back in at all and just wait for my redundancy settlement to be calculated.  Merry Christmas.

When I got home I contacted our insurer and mortgage lender to tell them what had happened and to start claiming on the redundancy insurance that I had been paying into.

    No.

It turns out that I hadn’t been paying for that insurance, I had been paying for long term illness cover.  So they wouldn’t honour my claim.

I asked our mortgage lender about any mortgage help and they said that they couldn’t help us.

The financial crisis was in full swing here in the UK and I worked in the financial sector, jobs were not forthcoming.  So I started branching out to get anything I could.

    Nothing.

But we were still grateful for my husband’s job.

Then my husband had a nasty accident at work which meant he couldn’t work.  His boss came to visit him at home to tell him that he was being released by the company.

So, we had to sell our home.

When we had our flat valued we found out from the estate agent that the price we paid for it was nowhere near what the flat was ever worth.  And so we had to sell in negative equity.

We have had to take an IVA to try to pay this back which we are STILL trying to pay back.

So, we decided that maybe as neither of us could get jobs, it was time to pursue our dreams of owning our own company.  So we set up our own business.

We had to move in with my parents for a while, which was a terrible idea.  My parents hated the idea that we wanted to go into business for ourselves and tried to do everything they could to stop us (and still do).  Even withholding any help (emotional or financial) to try and starve us to stop.

But we were so sure in our beliefs that the more action we took the better things would get.

Our friends had bought a house and wanted to let their old house out, so we took it.  It was tiny and I hated it, but I couldn’t bare living with mom and dad any longer.

After we had been there a while, still pushing away at our company, still barely surviving, our friends inform us that they are selling their house and we had to get out.  Quickly.

Into another rented property that I didn’t really like, but we had very little choice.  Right from the off it was a death trap.

We started to feel ill.  And moody and very, very sleepy.  Until one night we noticed a strange smell.

We had been complaining to the letting agents for months that we had huge gas bills that we couldn’t pay and that the boiler kept going out, it burned with a tiny yellow flame and that we felt there was something wrong.  Our landlord kept insisting it was safe.

My husband turned everything off, opened all the windows and called an emergency gas number.  Transco came right out, confirmed a massive carbon monoxide and gas leak, sealed off the boiler, flue, meter and gas hob and stuck ‘danger do not use’ stickers everywhere.

We had no choice but to go back in with my parents.

Our landlord got away scot free and we were left with a massive gas bill that we have now had to have a pay as you go meter fitted to the gas meter in our current home that we have to put £10 a week on which the gas company take towards paying off our debt.

We are currently without heating or hot water as we can’t afford to put anything on the meter.

But we were grateful to be alive.

Another friend offered us their house as they were moving in with relatives.  We accepted and were very grateful.

Still struggling to make ends meet, we gratefully took up their offer and moved in.

We felt very grateful, even though the house was nowhere near perfect,

Then the roof blew off and it rained in cutting off our electricity.

But we were still grateful that we had a home and that we could still afford to eat.

Our business started to fail and we were forced to accept housing benefit.  In the second payment, the bank decided to pay another bill before our rent, therefore there wasn’t enough for our rent.

Before giving me chance to explain and try to sort it out, our ‘friends’ turned nasty and started accusing us of stealing from them and forcing them into poverty.

We then decided that now was the time to go back to the rat race and give up on our failed business attempts.  we had given it our all and it had ruined our credit history (we had a completely clear history before all this started), caused a lot of grief and cost us a lot of dignity and friendships.

So we revamped our CVs and hit the job market hard.

We have been hit with rejection after rejection and we keep applying for anything we can.

But now our situation is critical and we have no support.  we have no gas, we have no fuel for our (very old and unreliable) car, we have no telephone, we have only one mobile between us which we need for companies to get in touch with us in case of any offers of interviews, we have no food and we have huge debts and £3 in the bank.

We have been grateful, we have taken action, we have acted on our intuition, we have meditated, we have invested in ourselves with books, courses and seminars (both for our business and spiritually), we have created vision boards, repeated affirmations, tried NLP, tapping, Brain entrainment, self hypnosis, visualisation, we have tried to stay positive and always tried to take advantage of any opportunities that we have been presented with and we now cannot afford to survive.

Every time we are grateful for something it is ruined and everything we have ever tried has appeared to go wrong, even though my belief had always been that sometimes things might seem as though they are falling apart, but they are actually falling into place.

Now my husband is spiraling into depression, we want to get out of our ‘friend’s’ house, we are cold, hungry, penniless and I have been diagnosed with PMDD which makes 10 days of the month unbearable for us both.

I can’t/won’t tell my parents about our situation as they have made it so clear that we don’t have their support and they hate my husband, even though he is bringing in the only wage at the moment, even though it is sporadic and in little bits.  Also my mom suffers with clinical depression and relies on me heavily when she’s in a dark place.

So, what can we do?  we only drink water, we don’t go out, we haven’t bought ourselves anything new for years, we don’t have a TV, we only run the car when we need to (and we only have one car), we don’t read magazines or newspapers and we don’t indulge in any hobbies.  When I do have any spare money it goes on either food or repaying our debts.

I’m starting to despair.  What are we supposed to do now?  Anything that we had that was worth anything we sold.  We need our car but even that is an old Freelander which is on it’s last legs.  But we don’t owe anything on it as it was a second hand car we part exchanged our old car for.

I feel that although I understand that in some way we have attracted our situation, it hasn’t been through overindulgence but sheer bad financial advice and unlucky circumstances (even though I’ve never been a believer in luck).

Again, sorry for the big rambling post.  I have a load more examples of things going wrong on a day to day basis (for example, a routine gas inspection has rendered our oven unsafe and our landlord has told us that it wasn’t part of the lease but on loan to us and we need to sort it out).

    What is wrong with us????

    Dear Vicky:

Two and a half years ago you posted here, describing your financial troubles then. You wrote then, May 2015: “my husband and I have been trying to live our lives by the Laws of the Universe.” and “We have been ‘following our passions’ for years, acting on every opportunity that came our way, keeping our eyes and ears open.”

I asked you at that time: “Can you list the laws of the universe you are referring to? Is “acting on every opportunity that came (your) way” one of these rules of the universe?
And what do you mean by acting on every opportunity? For example I have the opportunity right now (it is an extreme example, of course) to jump off my deck (hoping I can fly but am likely to fall)- do I take the opportunity?
If you answer these questions, if you find them worthwhile I can give more thought to your post and hope it is helpful to you”

You replied to my post saying that you will get back to me. You never did. Since your troubles now are the same (plus) as two and a half years ago, would you  like to get back to me now?

Yes I remember that.  I am sorry that I didn’t get back to you then, things got worse and worse and as our situation grew more and more desperate, there have been several occasions we have been without the internet.  And then I completely forgot about this site and that I had an account here.  It wasn’t until I was searching for somewhere to ‘unburden’ my problems as it were, that I found it again!

The laws of the universe that I was referring to (and I realise I gave a very vague description previously) are (but not limited to) The Law of Attraction, The Law of Manifestation, The Law of least Resistance and The Law of Detatchment. (There are many more, but I can only remember the ones I have been trying to understand fairly recently).

The ‘acting on every opportunity’ was a reference to using the Law of Attraction, in that you raise your vibrations to match the frequency of the energy of the thing you wish to attract and then look out for anything that matches up to this.  Obviously, we didn’t just follow blindly anything that we felt might be an opportunity, for example, the opportunity arose to travel abroad, but it didn’t seem to align with our life at the time, and it wasn’t practical to do within our current financial budget so after a lot of thinking, we decided against it.  One of the books that I was reading at the time stated that the universe (higher power, cosmos or God, whatever you decide to call it) will offer you the opportunity several times and that there is never a ‘missed’ opportunity because if it is meant for you, you will see the same opportunity over and over again.  We didn’t see the opportunity to travel again once we had made our decision not to follow it.

I realise that typing like this, I’m not able to get my point across as eloquently as I would like to, and as I am still suffering some after effects of being gassed, my brain isn’t as sharp as it once was, so a lot of what I want to say doesn’t always come out in the right way, I apologise for that and hope that my posts aren’t too confusing or appear as ‘thrown together’ as I feel they are.

Yes, we have been struggling for a long time, and I wrote my original post shortly after we had our encounter with carbon monoxide, so I was even more confused then than I am now!

    Dear Vicky:

I hope your brain clears all the carbon monoxide it encountered, how unfortunate. Lots of what you described read like events out of your control, for example, the gas leakage and the economic situation in the UK.

Regarding the Law of Manifestation, it states, as I read it, that our thoughts are cosmic waves that extend beyond our brains, and make things happen. I strongly disagree. Our thoughts exist only in our brain, in between our ears. It is only what we say and do, if there is someone else present to hear what we say and be affected by what we do, that extends beyond our brain.

The Law of Detachment claims that the way to acquire anything is to relinquish attachment to it. I disagree with this claim in regard to acquiring worldly good, material things. Plenty of people acquire material things because of their attachment to those things- this is the key to marketing, why people keep buying bigger and better trucks and so forth.

Regarding The Law of Attraction, you wrote it is : “that you raise your vibrations to match the frequency of the energy of the thing you wish to attract and then look out for anything that matches up to this.” Let’s say you are in a party, if you smile and act in outgoing, friendly ways, you will attract people who will be interested in spending time with you, at least during the party and for as long as you keep the behavior up. This law operates sometimes in some contexts. On the other hand, your thoughts, I believe, do not exit your brain, and so, they do not create vibrations and do not attract circumstances in life.

The Law of Least Resistance, or of Least Effort is indeed a natural law, water flows to the lowest point because it is of least resistance. A predator will conserve its energy until there is a prey to hunt, so it expands the least effort so to achieve the maximum benefit. Of course, in your case, and your husband’s, the two of you have been expanding lots of effort with minimal benefit. Part of the reason for the failure of this law in your lives is circumstances beyond your control. Part of the reason is probably within your control.

What is it that was in this years long financial decline that was in your control, at least in part, I wonder… and ask you, any ideas?

Thank you for your reply Anita.

They way I understood the Laws of Manifestation and attraction weren’t that our brains give off cosmic waves but that everything is made up of energy and each ‘thing’ be it living or otherwise, is vibrating at a certain frequency in order to actually be that ‘thing’ for example, a drink can is vibrating at the frequency it needs to be a drink can.  When we think about something, our brains, which process a vast amount of information, only filter through the information relevant to that thought, therefore, you notice ‘opportunities’ in line with your desires.  When we concentrate on something (for example a certain type of car) if we can tune our vibrational frequency to be in line with the frequency of the car, then we attract the car to us in one way or another, through a series of noticed opportunities which we would need to act upon in order to actually get the car.  The ‘thoughts’ really are only important in pointing our attention in the desired direction.  The brain then controls the vibrational frequency of the cells of the body and new neurological pathways are formed inside the brain telling you to notice certain things.  For example, when I was looking for a name for our little boy, I picked a name that I had only heard once or twice before but once I had picked the name and started calling our son by it, I started to meet people with the same name and started hearing it all over the place.  Once my brain had learned that I was interested in the name, it changed so that I would notice what had always been there but up until then had just been edited out with all the other information the brain processes during the day that is of no interest to me.

I think this is why you wrote “This law operates sometimes in some contexts.” as it does appear that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t depending on how you interpret the information within your brain.  But a law is absolute, it cannot work sometimes and not always otherwise if two aeroplanes, both flying at the same height, switched off their engines mid air then one would plummet to earth while the other would stay in the air.

This seems to contradict the law of detachment on the face of it, as to detach from something usually means to forget about it and stop focussing on it, but the way I understand it is that in order to ‘have’ something you must first be in the vibrational state of  ‘having’ it.  Therefore, detachment to me means to be in a state of mind that I already have what I want, therefore I no longer need nor want it.

The law of least resistance to me is not so much expending as little energy as possible in order to achieve maximum results, as doing things or settings things up in my life so that situations will flow more readily to me.  For example, looking for a job, if I didn’t put in the extra effort to make sure that my covering letter and CV were geared up for the vacancy for which I am applying, then I am not creating a path of least resistance for the interview to come to me.  But, by going the extra mile and putting in a little extra effort then I am creating a path of least resistance for my desired job to be one step closer to me.

Unfortunately, your last paragraph confused me somewhat (I guess it is to make me look back over what I have written and so that I can have an ‘aha’ moment and understand where I am going wrong) but because I have understood the laws differently from the way you have, I can only assume that you mean we have not been utilising the law of least resistance in the way you have outlined it.

Or maybe what you mean to bring my attention to is that the way I have understood the laws and the way in which I have been trying to use them (although ‘use is the wrong word as a law works whether you think you are ‘using’ it or not, but I can’t think of a better way to put it) to live my life hasn’t worked for me, therefore looking at something from anothers understanding might help me to succeed where I have otherwise failed?

Thank you for your advice, I am always happy and open to anothers point of view and more than happy to try out ideas and suggestions different from my own as (as you’ve probably already established from my original post) my own have not always worked for me.  There is no point in asking for advice and then ignoring it because it doesn’t line up with my own point of view.

    Thanks again

    Vicky

    Dear Vicky:

You are welcome. I see these laws as a mix of science, sensible thinking and fantasy, magical thinking. These laws include elements of the natural and the supernatural. The law of gravity, on the other hand, is a purely scientific, strictly natural law. This is why the laws we discussed here on your thread are open to individual interpretation and gravity- is not.

You asked for advice regarding an ongoing, years long financial decline. You wrote here and years ago on your previous thread that you’ve been practicing these laws. My advice is that you re-evaluate your understanding and practice of these laws. Just because someone came up with a law that has some elements of truth to it, does not mean that all of it is true, and it does not mean that the whole of it is a law at all.

Take the parts of any such law that have worked for you, keep practicing those. Reject the parts that didn’t work for you. Maybe abandon these law altogether.

Regarding my last paragraph of the previous post to you, it is in line with my point here: rethink, re-evaluate the ways you think and live. Make your goal not to submit to part-true-part-not laws, but to find out for yourself what is true and what is not, what is useful and effective, and what is not. Have a Beginner’s Mind, look at these laws and at life as if you never read about those laws.
