Hello, I have been suffering from depression for a long time. But now I have hit the wall. I feel suicidal and could not study at all. I am going to fail for the first time in finals at college. How can I cope?

For a long time I suffered through depression myself but it DOES get better. You may be thinking that 1 exam can change your whole life. But to be honest in a year or 2 you wont remember what the exam was even about. I did not have the best grades in college. I tried really hard but I never felt like I was good enough or worthy enough to make something of myself. I had to change that way of thinking to realize there was something that I had inside me that was special and I can do anything. That was 4 years ago. Today I am a second year medical student on my way to becoming a doctor. A dream that I thought was unattainable when I was in your shoes. You are special. YOU CAN DO ANYTHING! Dont let 1 exam or 1 finals week keep you from doing the things you set out to do. Remember back to that first day of college when you were filled with all of your hopes and dreams for what your future had in store. It will revive you and make you realize your dreams are not so far from reach! Dont let self-doubt get in the way of who you truly are. That little voice in your head that seems like its screaming that you cant do it is lying! Your heart is stronger than is seems and it can withstand the force of finals and exams. YOU CAN GET THROUGH THIS!

feeling suicidal is serious and you need to act. You are MUCH more important than any finals. Your health and wellbeing (both in body and mind) need to come first.
Breath. Is there a suicide hotline in your country you can call? It can help to talk to someone directly. Look up the number and call them right now. Also feel free to post here anytime. How do you know that you will fail? Is it a fact or is it your fear talking?

I have nothing particularly wise to say–except I have felt suicidal. I got help in may different forms. Find what helps….let us know how you are doing.
Feel the love and strong shoulders until you reach in and know you are love–you are strong. One day you will help someone else who feels as you do. BECAUSE many of us have and we are knowing you can take steps toward your strength.
Get an A+ in that today.

You mentioned in a previous thread your depression and body image but didn’t share about it. You talked about a guy, you called him Rin- your mother thought he was not good enough for you and was afraid your grades were suffering because you were thinking about him.
Can you share here about the origin, the beginning of your depression and body image: how old where you when it started? What were the circumstances? And what has your relationship with your mother been in the past and now?

July 25, 2016 at 5:47 am #110472ridiredhoodParticipantThank you everyone.
I pulled an all nighter and hopefully I’m going to pass 😀Dear Anita,
My depression started when I was in eighth grade. Long before I met Rin. My father was a drug addict and jobless. My mother and dad fought a lot. Now it’s all better and everythings ok. Sometimes I just still can’t cope. Rin does not contact me anymore. That’s ok too. Not everything is meant to last. Thanks again.

I am glad you are feeling better and hope to that you will pass the test you took.
If your home life is okay now (What is it like? Is your father still living with you? Is he working and off drugs and how are your parents relating to each other… I wonder), and you are still anxious and depressed at times because of the turmoil that was, then I hope you attend therapy with a competent, empathetic therapist to heal the wounds of the past.
Those fights between your parents injured you, and those wounds need to heal.
And you are welcome. Hope you post again and again.

My home life is excellent. Yes, my father still lives with us, is off drugs and is working. And I cannot afford therapy right now. I’ll take it when I can afford it. First I need to graduate and get rich.
July 25, 2016 at 7:01 am #110478AnonymousGuestDear ridiredhood:
How are you going to get rich?
I hope you can attend therapy before you get rich (it doesn’t have to cost a lot of money: there is such a thing as free therapy, sliding scale… also other free resources).
