    Hi everyone,

So I’ve hit the breaking point with my job, the thought of staying one more year is nearly an impossible feat. I’ve just sent out my resume to a friend who works in a call center for a cell phone company and I’m extremely excited for the change… Then I spoke with my friend who works at a call center for a different phone company because I was curious about the job and it sounds really good for me. Then I asked how I should request to be paid 1$ over minimum and my friend laughed and told me starting wage was almost 10$ more than what I wanted to ask for.

Once I heard that my anxiety kicked in and my inner critic began pointing out how I’m not worth that much money. It’s been about an hour fighting with myself but I’ve calmed down enough to ask, how do you convince yourself you are worthy? I live in a small town without a car so job hunts usually last month’s, and every job I’ve worked since I was 16 have been minimum wage. So I’m convinced that’s how life works, does anyone know any way to help convince yourself you are good enough? Specifically dealing with being paid. I’m worried if I get an interview my fears will get the better of me.

    Thanks everyone.

    Dear Nekoshema:

Dealing with such is a one step at a time thing, you take one step, feel the anxiety, calm yourself, move slowly toward the goal, relax, take another step and so forth. There is no One time solution that will work “from now on.” It is not going to be a smooth ride. Prepare for the interview, type questions you may be asked and practice the answers. Be as authentic as you can but self- respecting in your answers. You can express your less than … perfect confidence but in a way that is self dignified. You can say you don’t know if you have the required skills (if you don’t) but that you are very motivated to learn. So preparing for the interview is one step, setting the interview is another step, dressing for it is another step. going there, etc. One step at a time.
