    Hi wonderful people,

Generally I have a good structure and mechanisms in my life so I can cope well with stress, manage anxiety and deal with feelings that crop up when past pain is triggered.

But during my period and the days running up to it, everything goes out the window.

It feels like all my past issues, just hit me at full force. From past relationship issues, self esteem issues, family issues, work etc. But they aren’t current! I struggle sleeping during this time, cry so much and have anxiety attacks. I have a feeling that I just want to run away from everything. It’s so much old emotional pain, I just want to go to a forest and scream! It’s so overwhelming.

I understand that during a women’s menstrual cycle your hormones change and this has an effect on your mood etc. But I feel like the way I feel is such an extreme, once a month, every month. It’s exhausting. As soon as I’m coming to the end of my period, I’m fine again!

I find it upsetting because the issues that creep back up are not relevant to my current situation. And my usual tips and tricks to stay in my peace don’t work!

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this? Any mindfulness tips for when your at your least mindful?!

Thank you for reading this and I will really appreciate any comments.

    Hi Ambar,

I did experience this.  It was when I was younger.  I hated it.  It seemed to be worse for me during peri-menopause.  I’m not sure of your age.  There are several suggestions that could help….exercise…..avoid caffeine…..treat yourself very kindly during that phase.  There are medical suggestions I could offer as well.  Let me know if you would like those.

    Dear Ambar:

I wonder if you saw a medical professional or professionals regarding this matter. Maybe there is something you can do, some supplement that you can take a few days before each period that will reduce the  intensity of your  symptoms.

Literally going through the same dilemma. I’m on my period and my emotions make me wanna scream but as soon as I’m finished with it, I’m back to normal. It makes us feel crazy. You’re not alone.

    Hey Ambar,

this is also an issue for me. I used to be depressed full time when I was younger, through therapy, medicine and working on myself it got better. But then I noticed how once a month all that work seemingly would go down the drain and there I was, throwing a temper fit because of some stupid reason or wallowing in the same old regrets and depressive thoughts I had hoped to leave behind. This is still an ongoing issue for me but I manage it a bit better now.

Some things that I would suggest:

    – go to the doctor and have your iron levels checked. Iron deficiency and PMS make for a bad combination, and its something that is so low key that you might not notice it even if you have severe iron deficit
    – Pamper yourself during the PMS time. Nice food, long walks, enough sleep (here also good iron levels can help at least for me)
    – Cut back on anything stressful, reduce your workload if you can and do one thing after another
    – mark in a calender when your period starts / ends. When I feel exeptionally moody without good reason I check the calender and see “ah, only six more days until my period probably starts, time to be especially kind to myself”
