My boyfriend of two months broke up with me last week. He said that he always hurts me and I deserve to be with someone better; but he also said he still loves and cares about me and still wants to talk to me. He has poor self-esteem and he has depression. I want to be there for him, but I’m afraid he’ll push me away. I really love him and he makes me so happy. I’m at a loss on what to do.

    Hi merp1234,
    I’m sorry to hear this.

Are these his only reasons for breaking up with you?
Have you had a proper conversation about how he feels and is coping with things?
It does sound to me, from what you’ve said, that he is struggling with himself – is he getting any therapy?

    Poppyxo,

He mentioned he didn’t want to be in a relationship at the moment right before I stopped talking to him and cut the cord, but what he said the most was that he hurts me.

I didn’t have a proper conversation with him on how he feels because he was focusing on how much he’s “hurt” me– which he hasn’t, aside from breaking up with me. He’s unfortunately not getting any therapy.

    Hi merp1234,
I wonder why you are here asking these questions when you haven’t approached him – the other person in the relationship?
Would you approach him to have this conversation?

    Poppyxo,

I want to approach him, but I don’t know how to. I don’t want to scare him off.

    Dear merp1234:

Better approach him and talk, ask him what he meant by not wanting to hurt you. You wrote above that you “don’t want to scare him off”- but he already broke up with you, didn’t he? How much farther can he possibly be scared off?
