    Dear Reader:

Worldometer, Feb 18: Over half a million Covid deaths in the U.S., 2,542 new deaths yesterday. Close to a quarter million Covid deaths in Brazil, 1,195 new deaths yesterday. Over 150 thousand Covid deaths in India; 89 new deaths yesterday. Almost 120 thousand Covid deaths in the U.K., 738 new deaths yesterday.

USA Today, The U.S. lost a whole year of life expectancy- and for Black people, it’s nearly 3 times worse, Feb 17: “A study published Thursday found life expectancy in the United States dropped to its lowest level in 15 years, and even lower for Black Americans and Latinos, during the first half of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Data through June 2020 shows life expectancy at birth for the total U.S. population fell from 2019 by a year to 77.8 years… Life expectancy for Black populations declined the most from 2019 – by 2.7 years, to 72 years..  Latinos experienced the second-biggest decline, falling 1.9 years since 2019 to a life expectancy of 79.9 years…

“Black Americans are hospitalized with COVID-19 at 2.9 times the rate of white Americans and die at 1.9 times the rate, according to CDC data. Latinos are hospitalized at more than three times the rate and die more than twice the rate of white Americans…

“Health experts fear U.S. life expectancy in 2020 as a whole will be worse than the half-year numbers because they do not account for the fall and winter surges that led to record COVID-19 deaths…”

    Dear Reader:

In my very first post where I pasted numbers from Worldometer regarding the pandemic was in my thread Coronavirus, in March 19, 2020, almost a year ago. I  will now compare the numbers from that post, to the numbers of yesterday, March 5, 2021:

    March 19, 2020: “Coronavirus cases world-wide: 236,921.  Total deaths worldwide: 9,829“.

March 5, 2021: coronavirus cases world-wide: 116,870,580. Total deaths worldwide: 2,595,204 (approx.. 260 times increase/ 26000% increase of total deaths).

March 19, 2020, counties in order of most cases to least, first number is the number of total coronavirus cases; the second number, in parenthesis, is number of deaths: “China: 80,928 (3,245), Italy: 41,036 (3,405),  Iran: 18,407 (1,284), Spain: 17,395 (803), Germany: 14,544 (43), USA 11,355 (171)… UK: 2,692 (137)”.

    March 5, 2021, countries listed in the same  order as the above: China: 89,962 (4,636), Italy: 3,046,762 (99,578), Iran: 1,681,682 (60,594), Spain: 3,149,012 (71,138), Germany: 2,497,067 (72,356), USA: 29,606,735 (535,908), UK: 4,213,343 (124,419).

    Dear Reader:

Worldometer, March 16: there have been almost 2.7 million deaths worldwide, and almost a 100 millions people recovered worldwide, of these deaths, almost 550 thousand (over half a million)took place in the U.S., and over 22 millions recovered.

Yesterday in the U.S., there were 45,045 new cases. The plateauing of daily new cases started January 8: there were 308,306 new cases on that day, the highest in the third wave and in all of the pandemic. Yesterday in the U.S. The a plateauing of daily new deaths started January 12: there were 4,518 new deaths on that day, the highest in all of the pandemic.

In Italy yesterday, there were 15,247 new cases (close to 27 thousand new cases four days ago, March 12) and 354 new deaths, a recent increase in daily new cases and daily new deaths that appear to be part of a new wave of infections and deaths.

Market Watch, “They thought that they were home free and they weren’t.” Fauci days Covid-19 resurgence in Europe is a warning for the U.S., March 16, 2021: “That was the message from Dr. Anthony Fauci, who warned that as COVID-19 cases plateau around 50,000 to 65,000 a day in the U.S., it is ‘absolutely no time to declare victory.’

“’When we see that leveling off at a high level, there’s always a surge of a risk back up. And in fact, unfortunately, that’s exactly what’s happening in Europe right now,’ said the U.S.’ top infectious-diseases specialist in a Fox News on Sunday appearance.

Europe, which ‘always seems to be a few weeks ahead of us,’ had the same kind of decline when they plateaued, Fauci pointed out. ‘They thought that they were home free and they weren’t. And now they’re seeing an increase up. We have to avoid that,’ he said. Fauci said it was ‘reasonable’ to expect the U.S. could experience normal Fourth of July celebrations this summer, a prospect recently raised by President Joe Biden, given the pace of vaccinations in the U.S. ‘I think the only thing you have to be careful of is…that plateauing.'”

    Dear Reader:

Worldometer, March 24: yesterday, there were close to 60 thousand new cases and 26 thousand new cases and 1,070 new deaths (in a not yet 3rd wave); there were 117 new deaths in Turkey- the highest number of new deaths in its third wave of the pandemic; close to 19 thousand new cases and 551 new deaths in Italy yesterday- the highest number of new deaths in Italy’s current third wave of the pandemic;  over 17 thousand new cases in Poland and 400 new deaths, the highest number of new deaths in Poland’s current second wave of the pandemic.

ETNT Health, USA, March 24: “With Spring here, and the vaccines rolling out, it’s tempting to think the coronavirus is basically over—but it’s truly not. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the chief medical advisor to the President and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, appeared Good Morning America today to remind Americans that you need to be careful to stay safe—and to stay alive.

“Dr. Fauci started off on an optimistic note. ‘Well, I’m quite optimistic about what the impact of the vaccines are going to be because every day we give up to 3 million doses of vaccine in people’s arms,’ he said. ‘I believe that’s going to ultimately have a very positive impact, but in the meanwhile…the number of cases in the country have plateaued. That’s not good. They should keep going down and down. And they’ve plateaued at a level of about 53,000 cases a day, which is not good because we’ve seen this before—when you plateau like that, there really is a danger of a resurgence,’ he said. ‘We’re actually seeing that in Europe. And quite frankly, we generally are about three to four weeks behind the dynamics of the outbreak that we see in Europe. So given that the Europeans are surging back up, that is very clear that this is a risk that we will be doing the same thing. Don’t pull back. We need to keep doing the public health measures that we talk about.’…

“Follow Fauci’s fundamentals and help end this pandemic, no matter where you live—wear a face mask that fits snugly and is double layered, don’t travel, social distance, avoid large crowds, don’t go indoors with people you’re not sheltering with (especially in bars), practice good hand hygiene, get vaccinated when it becomes available to you”.

Worldometer, April 1 2021: yesterday- there were 89 thousand new cases in Brazil, and an all-time pandemic record high number of new deaths: 3,950 deaths. There was a second-wave record high number of new cases in India: more than 72 thousand new cases, and 458 new deaths. Cases are rising in France as well: almost 42 thousand cases and 325 deaths.

There were over 69 thousand new cases in the U.S. yesterday and 1,188 new deaths, in what looks like the end of a third wave turning into a beginning of a fourth wave.

    Dear Reader:

Worldometer, April 26, 2021: It is getting close to 150 million cases and closer to 20 million deaths world-wide.

It is getting closer to 20 million cases and close to 200 thousand deaths in India, with a steady increase of daily cases ever since March 8 (over 15 thousand cases that day), to a sharp increase since April 3 (over 90 thousand cases that day), to a record high of over 350 thousand cases yesterday, April 25.

Daily deaths have also increased sharply since March 30 (355 deaths  on that day) to a record high of 2,806 deaths yesterday, April 25.

In Brazil, there are over 14 million cases and close to 400 thousand deaths. The record high number of daily cases took place in March 25, with almost 98 thousand cases that day. The record high number of daily deaths took place on April 6, with 4,211 deaths on that day.

In the U.S. it’s getting close to 33 million cases and closer to 590 thousand deaths. The record high number of cases took place in January 8, with over 307.5 thousand cases on that day, and the record high of deaths took place on January 12, with 4,493 deaths on that day.

Associated Press, SOS messages,  panic as virus breaks India’s health system, April 26, 2021: “NEW DELHI (AP) — Dr. Gautam Singh dreads the daily advent of the ventilator beeps, signaling that oxygen levels are critically low, and hearing his critically ill patients start gasping for air in the New Delhi emergency ward where he works.

“Like other doctors across the country, which on Monday set another record for new coronavirus infections for a fifth day in a row at more than 350,000, the cardiologist has taken to begging and borrowing cylinders of oxygen just to keep his most critical patients alive for one more day…

“India was initially seen as a success story in weathering the pandemic, but the virus is now racing through its massive population of nearly 1.4 billion, and systems are beginning to collapse. SOS messages like the one Singh sent reveal the extent of panic in a country where infections are hitting new peaks daily…

“The White House said the U.S. is “working around the clock” to deploy testing kits, ventilators and personal protective equipment, and it would seek to provide oxygen supplies as well. It said it would also make available sources of raw material urgently needed to manufacture Covishield, the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine made by the Serum Institute of India. ‘Just as India sent assistance to the United States as our hospitals were strained early in the pandemic, we are determined to help India in its time of need,’ President Joe Biden said in a tweet…

“India’s government said last week it would expand its vaccination program to make all adults eligible, something long urged by health experts. But vaccinations take time to show their effect on the numbers of new infections, and there are questions of whether manufacturers will be able to keep up with the demand. The pace of vaccination across the country also appears to be struggling”.

Worldometer, May 11, 2021: over 33.5 million cases and almost 600 thousand deaths recorded in the U.S, over 30 thousand new cases and 370 new deaths were recorded yesterday, back to the numbers of September 2020, and down from the record high numbers of January this year (almost 305 thousand new cases on Jan 8, and 4,468 new deaths on January 12).

Over 23 million cases and over 250 thousand deaths recorded in India, almost 330 thousand new cases and 3,879 new deaths were recorded yesterday.

Over 15 million cases and over 420 thousand deaths recorded in Brazil, almost 30 thousand new cases and 1,018 new deaths were recorded yesterday.

USA Today, Most unvaccinated US adults don’t want the shot…, May 11: “Vaccine hesitancy has become the predominant mindset of Americans who have not yet been inoculated, making the drive for herd immunity ever more elusive. Just 11% of American adults who remain unvaccinated say they definitely will get the shot, while 34% say they definitely won’t, according to a new poll..  Another 27% say they probably will and 27% say they probably won’t. The vaccination rush has slowed, and President Joe Biden is meeting virtually with six governors today to discuss how to revive momentum. Biden wants 70% of Americans vaccinated by the 4th of July. That’s about what some experts say is needed to get the pandemic under control. Right now less than half of Americans had received at least one shot.”

India Today, At current rate of Covid-19 vaccination, India may take 3.5 years to reach herd immunity, May 11: “Based on the experience of over 100 days of vaccination, experts say India is in for a long haul. In case the pace of vaccination against coronavirus doesn’t shoot up drastically and more vaccine candidates are not included, India could take another 3.5 years to inoculate 70 percent of its population.”

    Dear Reader:

Worldometer, June 17: there are almost 178 million cases and closer to 4 million deaths recorded worldwide. Yesterday in the U.S., there were just over 14 thousand new cases (down from the January 8 record high of over 305 thousands new cases), and 434 new deaths (down from the January 12 record high of 4,463 new deaths).

Yesterday in India, there were over 67 thousand new cases (down from the May 6 record high of 414 thousand new cases), and 1,411 new deaths (down from the May 23 record high of 4,896 new deaths).

Yesterday in Brazil, there were close to 86 thousand new cases and 2,760 new deaths.

Yesterday in the UK, there were just over 9 thousand new cases (down from the January 8 record high of close to 68 thousand new cases) and 9 new deaths (down from the January 20 record high of 1,823 new deaths).

cnn. com/ interactive/ 2021/ health/ global covid vaccinations, June 17: the site lists 212 countries and territories where more than 2 billion doses of Covid-19 vaccines were administered by today. The following are the numbers of administered doses of vaccines per 100 people in various countries: Gibraltar has a population of just over 34 thousand people and it has the highest number (231), the UK (107), the U.S. (94), Brazil (38), India (19). African countries area among the countries with the smallest numbers,  less than 1 dose was administered per 100 people: Chad, South Sudan, Zambia, South Africa and more.

Reuters, Covid-19 cases surge in Africa, less than 0.8% of fully vaccinated, say officials, June 17: “COVID-19 cases rose by over 20% week-on-week in nearly two dozen African countries and progress on vaccinating Africans is proceeding slowly, with just 0.79% of people on the continent fully vaccinated.. ‘Africa is in the midst of a full blown third wave…We’ve seen in India and elsewhere how quickly COVID-19 can rebound and overwhelm health systems,’ Matshidiso Moeti, WHO regional director for Africa, told a news conference… The continent of 1.3 billion people has not yet been battered with an emergency during the pandemic on the scale of that recently facing India, but officials including Moeti continue to warn that such a catastrophe could hit.

“African nations lack sufficient numbers of hospital beds and oxygen supplies, and would be even more overwhelmed than India if cases surged in a similar way, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention warned in April. Africa has reported over 5 million COVID-19 cases, representing 2.9% of total cases globally, according to the Africa CDC.”

    Dear Reader:

Worldometer, June 22: Almost 180 million cases and getting closer to 4 million deaths recorded worldwide. Getting closer to 35 million cases and closer to 618 thousand recorded deaths in the U.S., with 10,571 new cases and 237 new deaths yesterday (Mon June 21)

AP Associated Press, US hitting encouraging milestones on virus deaths and shots, Monday, June 21: “COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. have dipped below 300 a day for the first time since the early days of the disaster in March 2020, while the drive to put shots in arms approached another encouraging milestone Monday: 150 million Americans fully vaccinated.

“The coronavirus was the third leading cause of death in the U.S. in 2020, behind heart disease and cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But now, as the outbreak loosens its grip, it has fallen down the list of the biggest killers.  CDC data suggests that more Americans are dying every day from accidents, chronic lower respiratory diseases, strokes or Alzheimer’s disease than from COVID-19.

“The U.S. death toll stands at more than 600,000, while the worldwide count is close to 3.9 million, though the real figures in both cases are believed to be markedly higher. About 45% of the U.S. population has been fully vaccinated, according to the CDC. Over 53% of Americans have received at least one dose of vaccine. But U.S. demand for shots has slumped, to the disappointment of public health experts… The virus still has a chance to spread and mutate given the low vaccination rates in some states, including Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Wyoming and Idaho… COVID-19 hospitalizations in southwest Missouri have risen 72% since the beginning of the month as of Friday.  The fall will bring new waves of infection, but they will be less severe and concentrated more in places with low vaccination rates… Anyone who is not vaccinated can become infected and transmit the virus”.
