Hi there. I’ve been feeling like i don’t have a unique way of speaking. i find that everyone i meet has their special way of talking, the phrases they tend to use, the flow in their sentence that makes the way they speak, them. I on the other hand feel like i tend to follow the way the person i’m talking to speaks. I don’t know how to explain this, but i’ll imitate the way they speak and i get so frustrated when this happens. cause i don’t know why it does and i don’t know how this is possible.
If a person has a distinctive way of speaking, it becomes more obvious that i am following the way they speak!

Try and reciprocate that next time you enter a conversation with someone. Hold true to that voice you had in your own self-talk. Own it. Find that voice, and hold on to it.

Take time to listen to what others say (in whatever way they say it) and don’t be too soon to reply!
Understand that you do not need to reply to what others say straightaway.
You always have the choice to keep silent!
If you do want to reply – use your own words – it doesn’t matter what other people think.
Be thoughtful, be caring, be kind.
Speak your own truth.

We get influenced by expressions we hear, gestures we see and behaviors from birth to the present moment.
What you need is to grow awareness of how you speak, that is the main key here. It is obvious that you’ve put your focus on how others act and therefore, your mind follows that pattern. Our minds tend to follow what we tell them to focus on.
As an exercise, try to record yourself speaking. If it’s important to you, join your local toastmasters and there you’ll see people who develop public speaking and grow into their own area of comfort.
On the side and, as a personal suggestion, don’t make a big case out of it. You don’t lose what makes you special just because you don’t have a particular set of expressions that people associate to you.

In a sense, I’m sure most everyone has learned how to speak and use subsequent mannerisms from mimicking another, or from watching and trying the same things as a character in a book or movie. As myself, I was always consumed by my reading when I was younger, and movies and books would have profound changes on my demeanor and bearing; I’d find that it was difficult to be ‘me’ after watching something profound. My ‘style,’ or my ‘expression of language’ was constantly changing, and I think I suffered from a similar thing you described, Nana–I just didn’t have a unique way of expressing myself or talking, and whenever I thought I might, it changed and became awkward and strained again.
It wasn’t until University that I found a way. I reveled in my studies and that helped fuel an inner dialogue and attain the language I wanted to use. You’d have to reconcile who you want to sound like and who you have found that you sound like (even if this persona changes from time to time), and fuse them into one person. I’ve always scoffed at meditation, but I’ve found a method that works for me, when I’m in need of direction and focus. I believe you can do this ^__^

I read your blog post and totally understand your problem. Infact I have faced similar problem in my life and I know this can get tricky.
Stories have been an integral part of my life and I used this effectively when speaking on a difficult subject. I found this method easier to connect with the audience I am speaking to by narrating a relevant story to the subject I want to speak about. This hooks your audience and gives the attention the topic requires.
This method worked for me and I hope that it works for you too.
