Hello everyone,
My name is Alex and I’m pretty new here. I graduated in May of 2014 with a Bachelor’s in Communication Design and I am currently working in an advertising agency as an Assistant Art Director.
Long story short—I don’t know if I want to continue in this path. I think about me in 5+ years and I don’t seem to like it. I feel like I made a career mistake. I honestly dread coming to work every single morning—and the feeling of dreads continues throughout the day and after, when I feel unfulfilled.
I love going to the gym and I am really into fitness, I have considered going the path of a personal trainer. Of course I feel scared to make that change. I guess I’m afraid of failure. I think about it and a career in fitness seems rewarding and with a purpose to me, once I step into the gym I really feel great.
Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks,

I work in advertising myself, and totally get you! 🙂
There are two aspects in this:
1. If you love fitness, go for it! I don’t know how old you are, but if you just graduated in 2014, you should be young enough to make bold moves! If you want to be a personal trainer, you don’t even have to start over studying something like sports management, but you can make changes step by step!2. Can you use the job you have right now as a security net to finance education & training as a personal trainer? If you really feel your job is too dreadful, is it because of the agency or is it the kind of work itself? There are many different kinds of agencies, and maybe you need to make a small change first – go to a different agency or cut down hours to have more time for fitness… This way you can also make the transition smoother and try stuff out without the financial pressure and without too much fear of failure. Plus, failure is a great way to gain valuable experience and therefor nothing to be afraid of…
Good luck!

Early in my career, I felt as you do now. If you feel even slightly off-track, listen to your gut and make the move. I am older now and have responsibilities that don’t allow me the flexibility to go back to school and retrain for an entirely new career, so I am trying to make a move by putting the skills that I have honed to work in a more useful purpose. As Kath said, it sounds like you are younger, so DO IT NOW! I wish I’d done something years ago. I know it’s not too late for me to make a change, but it is proving more difficult. Save yourself the grief and move on now. Good luck to you! Look at the journey ahead as an exciting opportunity to make your life more meaningful.

I think what you are experiencing is very normal for a young person just out of college. I recently met a Veterinarian who did her undergrad degree in Business Administration. After several years of working in finance she realized it was a wrong fit for her. She left her corporate job and worked for a local animal shelter where she did the accounting and other administrative duties for a humble salary. It was here she discovered her love for animals. She never grew up around animals as she lived in an apartment where pets were not allowed. She decided to go back to university to complete her pre-requisite science courses necessary to enter vet school. She was accepted to vet school, completed the program and the rest is history! Why am I sharing this story with you? I want you to know that it is ok to feel this way and normal to consider a change. Although it is fine to make a change if that is what you truly desire, I would weigh your options first. Is there anything that you enjoy about your current job? What made you decide to pursue this career in the first place? In these economic times jobs like yours are few and far to come by and many people would love to be in your position. I suggest you do some job shadowing or interview current personal trainers to get a better feel for the industry before you make a switch. Sometimes when we are unhappy with our current circumstances we tend to believe that if things were different we would be happier. I have learned many times that this is not always true. I don’t provide advice but my opinion on the situation is this, try and improve your circumstances first. 1) Reach out to co-workers and build relationships with them. 2) See the positive in your situation (employment, salary, creative aspects of the job). I was once in your situation as well, but I realized that my circumstances were not the problem but instead the way I was viewing the situation.
All the Best,

It really helped me weigh out my choices. By the way I just turned 23 this week. Now I have to start making some decisions, which can be the hardest part!
Sometimes there’s this burning feeling inside that says I should go for it… to just do it. As for the people I currently work with I know they are not the problem, they are great people. It’s more the work, it simply feels empty and with little purpose. I really feel like what I am craving now is feeling like what I do matters, that it makes a difference or helps people.
I got a long road ahead of me and at the end of the day I want to feel satisfied and happy.Once again, I appreciate the thoughtful responses!

But this is YOUR life, do not live your life just to please others. I have learned that..still hard but little by little i just dont care how others think about me. -
