    Hello Rachel,
I’m glad to hear the Eckhart Tolle clip helped you some – the question you asked is an important one; and these difficult times are the times in our lives when we learn and grow.

If you think of a human being as having two parts – the human part that’s controlled by your mind, and the being part that’s guided by the deepest, wisest part of your self; that deepest part of your self is what Tolle is referring to as consciousness, which is a spark of the universal Consciousness, or Source, or higher power (or whatever you want to call it). At this level, we’re all connected. Although we see the outer forms of dogs, cats, humans, etc., at our core, we’re all the same energy that has split off into different forms. If you’re interested, I have a more detailed blog post about it here: http://www.nestintheforest.com/jivatma-sankrit-meaning/

In the second part about the journey back to Source, he’s referring to our (or your dog’s) consciousness / spirit / energy merging back with the source when we die.

If at all this has helped you and you want to understand more, I’d be more than happy to talk about it in detail.

Oh Gosh, I know this must be such a difficult time for you right now, Rachel. Not that any of us can really remove your distress, but if you read / like Eckhart Tolle, I wanted to share a video of him talking to someone about letting his dog go – TinyBuddha’s spam filter doesn’t allow me to paste a youtube link in here, but if you search for cL6Y3qXZmj0 on youtube, you should be able to find it.
    I hope it helps!

Oh wow! That’s amazingly brave of you Rae, for making such a major move – from a packed city life to a tiny house in the woods! I myself live in a little house in the woods, and I love it, despite some of its surprises! As for your fears, they’re very understandable, not knowing what you’re getting into – but that’s the only way you can find out right? I do believe that when you’re fully, completely yourself, (not trying to fit in or wearing a mask to look like everyone else), you carry an energy that’s strong and powerful that can draw people to you – the right people who are attracted to that energy. I sincerely hope your dream works out for you, and that you find peace and fulfillment in your new home in the woods.

You may be feeling withdrawal symptoms, Andrew M? πŸ™‚ We’re addicted to our phones and emails and social media after all! Even so, I think the more you practice unplugging, the more you’ll get used to it, and the more it will help your anxiety levels.

Also, the other things I suggested – to volunteer for a cause that you’d like to support, or working with animals or on a farm – might help you forget about your phone for a while, because you’re not alone with itchy thumbs? But it’s gotta be something you’re interested in!

    Hello ElleTinker700,
Holidays have gotten so out of control lately – I really don’t understand this greed to buy so much stuff! What’s everyone going to do with that much stuff? And to have to work more hours, step on other people, to make a few extra bucks – what a sad state of things!

You seem to have a good head on shoulders to be able to observe it with detachment πŸ™‚ Good Luck at your new job – I hope it’s a more peaceful environment for you!!

    Hello Andrew M,
Anxiety has become such a modern state of mind, because we’ve become such mental creatures. To use Inky’s term, we’ve become ungrounded, detached from our bodies and what they’re telling us, detached from our inner voice and what it’s saying, detached from our deepest feelings and fears – because our minds are taking over our thoughts completely.

Have you tried unplugging and trying to experience events as they happen to you? Try to set your mind and thoughts aside? I know it’s easier said than done, but simple exercises to become more present, where you can actually get in touch with your body, and / or nature really help. For ex., volunteering at a farm, going to the beach by yourself (if you’re in warm place in December), or working with animals, etc.

One of my favorite simple habits is simply to unplug and be by myself. I really enjoy doing that, and yet don’t do it enough – or it doesn’t seem enough!

And that’s absolutely fine with me Anita – I agree, we learn through our life, our experiences, our connections – as I’ve learned from you before and I’m learning from you now πŸ™‚ I hope I’m never arrogant enough to think that I’m any better than anyone else – that’s not my point of serving and supporting the community here – as I said, my only hope is to add to the positive energy on the planet; and if people think they can learn something from me, that’s great; and if they don’t that’s just fine too!

Hi Anita – Thanks for your honest feedback on how you feel about me, my perspectives and pushing my website. But you’re right, I’m also here to support the TinyBuddha community just for service’s sake. I do believe the positive energy we put out will help the planet even if it’s only in small ways. When I do add links to my website, they’re it’s only when I feel it’s relevant to the person who might need it.

As for you – I know that you’re a self-proclaimed atheist, that you don’t believe in God, religion or reincarnation, and that’s perfectly ok with me!! I’m not trying to get you to buy into anything I say πŸ™‚ I’m sincerely only trying to connect, support and communicate with the community here, including you. But you said you’d rather not communicate with me, so I’ll stop responding to your threads – sorry if I caused any harm to you – if so, it was unintentional.

Jack – I’m only looking up at trees πŸ™‚

That’s awesome bailsafe – and even better that you’ll be able to work something out while you still pursue your dreams… Good Luck!!

I’m glad you’re finding some ways out of this situation Treen! When your intentions are right, I’m sure you’ll be able to turn things around – it may take time, but stay strong!

    Hello TreenOfLane,
I just read this in an excerpt from Shonda Rhimes’ new book: “sometimes the people who loved you when you were angry, dark and β€œtwisty” don’t like to hang around when you lighten up”

This is very true – when we change, we’re impacting the lives around us, even if we don’t mean to. But you’re right in pursuing what’s right for you, you’re right in reaching out to your daughter to reconnect, you’re right to wonder why she’s not giving you more information about “what you did”

At this point though, if you feel like you’ve done everything in your power to reach out, it might not be a bad idea to give her some breathing room to figure herself out? I think the more you try to make it right, the more she might recede, just because she’s not ready.

If you do want to give it one last concerted try before you throw the ball into her court, you could try writing a long old-fashioned letter explaining your end of the story, and what your heart’s desire is – to repair your relationship with your daughter, and then let her know that you’re open to her when she’s ready.

This way you know you’ve done your best, and can go back to texting until she’s ready. Do you think this might work?

Then maybe start small? Rather than thinking it as a “severance” and making a big move to China once and for all, start with smaller separations? See how they react? See how you feel about their reactions? See if there’s anything you can do to help them while you make your choices?

Hello Laycee – I had missed your comment on this earlier. It is cathartic to look within at yourself sometimes isn’t it? To realize how far you’ve come on your journey? I didn’t know biting nails could be such a big issue, but it sounds like it was a life-changing one for you!!

You were also brave to extend the topic to include what you’re still working on – but I hope it doesn’t drag you down to list what still needs work? Life is about growing and evolving, but if you take on anorexia and anxiety and depression as a whole, those are huge things to take on!

I have two tips that might help:

  • Identify smaller things that you’d like to change that would lead to the bigger things you’d want to address. The advantage with trying to make smaller changes is that you’ll start changing immediately, and feel a sense of accomplishment. But the bigger idea here is that it also helps with generating energy and momentum toward your bigger goal.
  • My second tip to create change is to focus on the positive, rather than fighting the negative. For example, if you want to get rid of a habit, it might be easier to replace it with another one that you can be excited about, rather than try to completely deny yourself.

Also, I wrote a blog post on this topic a little while ago, see if it resonates with you: http://www.nestintheforest.com/samskara/

I hope this helps… Good Luck!

Oh wow – this is some list Anita! Me – I usually journal, meditate, read a lot, watch old movies. I do wonder about mood-altering drugs sometimes though – they seem like such an easy solution! But I never felt like I could justify them, just because I’ve never had it that bad.

I like the one about imagining you’re a hero and saving the lives of others πŸ™‚
