Hello everyone, Please provide me some guidances 🙂

I am 25 years old, going to be 26 years old soon, now I am working overseas in one of the big company in Singapore. My 3 years contract is almost finished and I am waiting for a bonus. I have a good job, the work is okay, and life is good. But I feel very bored, feel like no meaning in my life. Feel like I am just a cog in a giant machine. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I’ve been applied to my dream company such as google or facebook and still waiting for an answer. Which can take forever…

I can continue work in my current company, and renew my visa. But I really want change, have a better title, higher salary, and new environment. I don’t want to work in a small company or any other big corporation company (like my current one) because I am afraid the pay will be the same, slow progress, or it will be very stressful. The reason why I want to work in Google or Facebook, because I heard they constantly look for initiatives for good work, which I feel will help me to contribute to society in a bigger way and more meaningful. My parents won’t allow me to quit job without pay, because they want me to be independent.

I am afraid at the end of my contract (3 months from now). I will still be stuck, making the same amount of money, promotion very slow. I don’t know what happens to me. Please help and give me some guidance! Thank You 🙂

    Dear doremi:

About being “just a cog in a giant machine”-

The great majority of working people feel like cogs in a giant machine, I think. Even exciting jobs such as a courtroom lawyer and U.S presidents, caught in gridlocks, powerless to pursue their goals, may be feeling like cogs in the giant government machine.

Do you remember when you were a young child, the first time you painted something on paper, maybe in kindergarten, maybe before? Do you remember being so excited, feeling like you are the only entity in the whole world that can do that? That thing you made, your masterpiece!

And then as you grew up, you discovered that painting was not … that unique, not really… ?

We all start as believing the wold revolves around us. What a shock it is to find ourselves cogs in a giant machine.

What do you think so far? Interested in communicating with you more about this…

    Hi Anita,

Thank You for your reply. The feeling of unfulfilled has been around for quite sometimes, but I don’t know what to do with it. I know that I can’t quit my job because I have no plan whatsoever. I started making blog, writing articles, giving knowledge for free. One and two people respond it with interest, “Great Post”, “Good Work”. But that’s it. I don’t know what’s next on how should I monetize it or make it something I really become passionate about.

On the other hand, I remember when I was a child I immersed myself to read a lot of comic books, such as manga, disney, etc. Everything that full of illustration and stories. After I grow up, I went overseas and found a digital illustration book belong to my friend, totally captivated by it. I am not perfect, but I when I did my own illustration, I won award, admiration, etc.
However, that path of being illustrator comic book is totally out of the line with my current work. I am a web designer now.

So again, I am very stress. I want to join big company such as google, facebook, etc. so that I have bigger experience, financial freedom, feeling more respected and acknowledged, etc. That’s my parent’s dream as well. But on the other hand, I am very worried, worried that I am stuck in my life. Can I actually do something? My purpose in life…

    Thank You Anita 🙂

    Doremi,

I believe in you and believe you can achieve any job you want, that will make you happy. You should definitely go after your dreams!

My advice is keep brainstorming like you are, research to find a job they you will enjoy doing on a day to day basis. What’s your passion? Start from there and see what kinds of jobs offers are available that includes your every day passion and interest for a long career. Hope that helps. You said Google & Facebook. I know Google is based out of California and I believe Facebook’s headquarters is in Colorado. I will be sending out positive vibes that you get the job with either Google or Facebook. 🙂

    Namaste-

    M.

    Dear doremi:

A few things on my mind as I read your posts today:

    * You mentioned your parents’ dream about you and your dream- hope you separate the two and not lose yourself in their dreams.
    * You are stressed: try to relax. Find good ways to relax. To find answers… to even ask the right questions of yourself, calm is very important. When you are overly stressed, it is like having fog in front of you and all around. You can’t see through the fog. When you are calm, the fog clears and you can see. Also, be patient. Do not expect instant clarity when you are calm.
    * You wrote: “that path of being illustrator comic book is totally out of the line with my current work. I am a web designer now.”- Not necessarily a good idea to lock yourself into the identity of being a Web Designer. You may very well still be a Comic Book Illustrator even though it doesn’t bring you money presently.

    Please post again.

Thank You Anita. I think I’ve too much expectation for myself. Reading your reply makes me understand to stay calm and not expect quick clarity straight away.

I have been very fortunate for everything I do right now, I just realise I keep looking up without realizing how far I have walked.

Thank You Again, I will try to keep exploring and contributing in my life.
