My name is Anna, I’m married to Joe, and we have 2 fantastic teenage boys, the oldest being borderline special needs.

Our family was hit hard by the oil industry crash in Alberta, Canada. My husband runs a small business as a heavy equipment technician focused on repairing equipment used in the oil industry. He had been having terrible difficulty finding work for himself and his 2 additional service rigs. He was forced to park the 2 extra trucks in the hopes of keeping our operating expenses down.

Finally, after weeks of looking, and when our finances had just about run out, he managed to land a contract. There was finally light at the end of a stressful tunnel, but that was not to last.

Less than a week prior to his new job’s start date he was brutally assaulted by 6 men in the yard of a mechanical shop in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He had been picking up small jobs in an attempt to make ends meet and had gone to this shop to collect payment for a recently completed repair.

One of the men my husband had done the work for felt he was entitled to a discount on the invoice total. Apparently in his culture bartering is commonplace. My husband, thinking of our financial concerns, insisted he pay full price. The man left, then returned a short while later with 5 friends and began to harass my husband.

They started with pushing, shoving, and name calling, and ended with beating him brutally enough that he spent days in the hospital and required surgery. He sustained a severe concussion, multiple bruises, a broken nose, broken ribs and a broken ankle so severe that all three bones were completely detached and needed to be surgically repaired with 9 screws and a steel plate.

As a result my husband will be unable to return to work for months, and is currently needing specialized care and rehabilitation. It is entirely possible he will not be physically capable of working in his field even after his injuries heal.

I have been a stay at home parent for years, and also work from home, but what I earn simply isn’t enough to cover both the business loans and household expenses.

I am now my husband’s caregiver while he recovers, and as he is unable to get around on his own I also need to be available to transport him to his many medical appointments and therapy sessions. Although it all certainly needs to be done, it does limit the time I have available to work, and now we are unable to provide the necessities for our children.

At this point, one of the service trucks has been repossessed, and our home is now in foreclosure.

We do not have insurance coverage for his injuries, and although the individuals involved have been criminally charged they carry no insurance, so there isn’t a claim to be made that can help us financially.

We are without options at this point. We’ve sold all we have of value and have no funds to take our home out of foreclosure. We have been trying to find someone to purchase our home and allow us to remain as renters in an attempt to give our children some sense of security in this horrible situation, but have had no takers. The trauma of seeing their father in this condition has been devastating for them, and I can’t imagine what losing their home would do to their emotional well being.

With health and welfare of my family being the most important thing in my life I am appealing to your kindness to help us find a way to keep our home and allow my husband to recover from this traumatic event without worry for keeping a roof over our heads.

Please donate if you can and are willing, and if you are unable to do so I would ask you to please share our story (copy and paste link below) with as many people as possible.
