Hi. Basically as the title says, I hate my job. It’s making me depressed, I feel like it’s taking over my life.
I’ll start from the beginning. I didn’t do well in college, I never chased my dreams. I didn’t even attempt to go to university due to my father telling me getting a job would be more worth while of my time. I was stuck so I made a stupid and totally random call to join the Air Force. Bad mistake, I hated all the 5 years I did, I joined as an engineer which I never even had an interest in doing. It made me depressed, I developed anxiety and spent the last two years of my service taking meds for the anxiety and in therepy. So I left a month ago. Now I’m in an engineering job which I’m still not enjoying, it’s taking over my life. It’s just early mornings and late nights. Work, eat, sleep….repeat. It’s killing me and it’s only been a month. I try to talk to my parents but “I hate everything I do” and I should “Stop complaining”.
I want to do something totally different, I want to help people. I want to make a difference. As a kid I always wanted to be a doctor (never made the grades) so I got realistic. I wanted to join the emergency services, I think the idea of being a paramedic or a police officer enticed me. I want to help people and get a satisfaction from my job. Unfortunately in the UK these services are heavily cut and underfunded so there is a lack of recruitment. I also played with the idea of changing my career entirely and going into a different field. I just feel lost in life, I don’t want my stupid decisions as a young man to mess up the rest of my life. I also fear the disapproval I get from my parents.
It’s all just so complicated. I feel like I’ll never achieve what I want to do. Help.

You wrote that you fear disapproval from your parents. All children do and often, still do as adults. Which is the case with you as well.
This fear of their disapproval will have to be dealt with as you proceed. In your daily life as is, how does this fear manifest itself? What in your present life do you do or not do out of this fear? Examining this and then choosing to operate for your well being in any small way that is disapproved by them, will give you the practice to operate for your well being in big ways.
When you reduce this fear, you will have better access to your authentic desires, and your route to make those authentic desires happen will seem clearer and easier.

Sometimes it takes a long time to gain approval…you first have to demonstrate what you are made of, and that your intentions are true. Either way, approval and validation come second.
Your first step is to do the thing that you need to do for yourself in order to feel whole and content.
The great news is that, unlike many others in your position, you know what it is that would make you feel good: being of service to others in some capacity. That is the first step in the obstacle course and you have already conquered it. Narrow down exactly what you want to do.
The next step is to take action. This may include completely uprooting your entire life. Thank the universe that you are in a position that you are able to do this. The right choice is usually the HARD one. But even a small step in the right direction is going to make you feel better, and productive, than staying where you are and feeling powerless.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and the great news is that energy begets energy. So, even when it seems so hard to completely start from scratch, it doesn’t take long to start building momentum and, before you know it, you will be well on the path to what you love and you won’t even have to think about.
If completely uprooting your life and career are impossible steps to take, then the only other option is: Make the choice to change your mind about what you are doing…find ways to make it enjoyable…tweak the arrangement in whatever ways that would make it acceptable to you…but, above all, decide to GET. INTO. IT. Change your mind about it – fix your attitude. Nothing we are doing will be a success until we decide to be ALL IN. 100% RIDE OR DIE. Make the choice and decide to never look back.
I believe in you. You are on Tiny Buddha, so you have what it takes to do more and be more, and FIND THE ENERGY WITHIN YOURSELF that you need. Take breaks when you need them.
If you still need support, keep coming back here. Many others are still available to talk about this and to chime in with any advice they might have.

Are there volunteer services around you that you are interested in? Maybe try applying as a volunteer. That may help you build experience in that field of service. If nothing else, it will be the source of positivity in your life, while your job can be the source of income. Overtime, as your experience in your field of interest builds you can explore how to educate yourself further in that field, and maybe even applying for payed positions. I would also recommend starting saving if possible, so you have funds to see you through a career transition. Take it step by step, and hopefully you will get to a better place.
Take care,
