I’m currently a full time masters student who has just started writing my dissertation.
Toady I was offered an amazing opportunity for work. Although this is a voluntary 3 week placement it is with a great company that will surely open doors for me.
The problem I’m having is that the time period that I will be working is the last 3 weeks before my dissertation hand in. Additionally it is not in my city which means that I will have to stay in a hotel that will cost be hundreds.
To be honest, the financial side of it is not really an issue for me because of how great the opportunity is. I have been really struggling during my masters degree so far and this dissertation is the last thing I need to do to pass. I don’t want to let anything get in the way of my passing and I’m afraid that if I take this opportunity it will interfere.
There is also no chance of me getting an extension to my deadline.
Any advice would be very much appreciated as I’m panicking over what to do.

It all depends on the job market situation from where you live… Do you have recent graduates you know (from one-two years ago) to share their perspective, what was valued more while looking for a job- a good referral and experience or the degree itself? I know it’s ideal to get them both in some time… How much will this opportunity prolong your dissertation? And is your ultimate goal from your studies to get a good job?
If you asked me this question while I was still a student, I’d definitely say go for your studies… I know what a struggle they are and how ‘getting cold’ from studying can happen fast (many people who find decent job never finish the studies, which is a shame..). But few months after graduating, while job hunting in the middle of the recession, in place of high unemployment, I learned the hard way how much the employers value a decent job experience and a good references, sometimes more than the degree itself, so I regretted not having those, a lot!! They would have bean a game changer. So, I’d advice anyone in my position to get those by any means..
But that was the situation in my branch, in my country. Every field and place are story of it’s own, so I think advice from someone who graduated in your field and university recently, and went job hunting would be most helpful. I know some of my peer’s advises saved me a lot of trouble at that time..
Whatever you do, I wish you the best of luck and I know if you are determined, you’ll manage to get them both!

An extension to the deadline of your dissertation sounds like a good possibility.
How have you dealt with stress so far in your studies/ in life? What is your experience?
The plan you choose has to fit not what makes sense to a theoretical person, but to you, to who you are: how you handle stress, how you functioned in the past at situations close to what you are expecting (living in a hotel in another city away from where you are now/ working and studying at the same time/ changing your routine/ managing without close by friends or family that you may have now where you are, etc.)
