    Why I Despised My Skin Color & 5 Strategies That Improved My Self-Image

    I believed I was ugly and blamed it on my dark skin. I hated my skin color. Looking back, I realized it’s because I didn’t fit in with the white kids, nor did I fit in with the black kids.

    I am mixed race. I have a black father and a white mother. Until I started school, I never considered myself different. My family and I were close, and I felt love and acceptance.

    When I started second grade, I developed a crush on a boy, who never noticed me and fawned over the pretty blonde girl in class. She was beautiful, with springy blonde curls and a soft, feminine voice. She wore colorful dresses that enhanced her beauty. I felt drab and plain next to her. Thus, began my dislike of my dark, frizzy afro.

    As I grew older, the name calling occurred. I was called zebra, Oreo, and n*gger. I spent a lot of my youth in tears.

    I wish I could say that it got easier as I grew older. I grew envious of the blonde girls, who caught the boys’ attention. I even envied my two sisters. One had no trouble getting boys to like her, and the other had beautiful hair that fell naturally down her neck in wavy curls.

    However, entering the seventh grade solidified my hatred of my skin color and frizzy hair.

    I sat in the back of my math class working on my assignment, while passing notes to my friends. Exhibiting a form of bravery, I tossed a note to my secret crush named Mike. He wrote back which pleased me.

    In one particular note, I asked him why he didn’t like me. As I handed it to him, I hoped with all my might that he’d tell me I was wrong. When he gave me the note back, he smiled, and I grew hopeful. I opened it and tears formed in my eyes. My heart plummeted to my stomach and bile rose to my throat. His words seared my brain as if he said them aloud.

    “Because you’re ugly.”

    Devastation enveloped me. I crumbled up the note, but the words couldn’t be as easily destroyed like the piece of paper. It sat in the back of my mind as an explanation to me why boys didn’t like me.

    In ninth grade, I was called a dog and had spitballs spat at the back of my head. I left them there, too embarrassed to even rummage through my thick frizzy mass to find them.

    “Why did you let them throw spitballs at you?” the substitute teacher asked me after class, as she removed the wet globs from my hair.

    I shrugged and left the room thinking, “Why didn’t you stop them?”

    By the time I graduated from high school, I pretty much gave up on finding somebody to love me for me. I did go on dates, but I had to do the asking. Even as I went out with them, I could tell that they’d have preferred to be anywhere else but with me.

    I struggled with my self-esteem but hid it all behind a smile. I decided to just be myself, be friendly, be kind, and smile. In private, I would cry as I wrote my feelings in stories and journals.

    Then one day at the college computer room, I met Rick. He spoke to me and showed an interest in me. When he asked me out, I accepted. Unfortunately, my life never went like I had hoped. I got pregnant. He left me.

    Deciding to keep my baby, I raised him with the help of my parents and went back to college to get my degree. I decided then to focus on myself and my little boy. Naturally, obstacles surfaced, but I chose to be myself and incorporated five strategies that slowly helped me start liking myself.

    1. I practiced self-care.

    Although self-love needs to come from within, I knew I’d feel better about myself if I put more effort into my appearance, so I bought new clothes and changed my hairstyle. This reinforced that I was worth the effort. Wearing flattering clothes and makeup enhanced my skin tone and body shape.

    I also took care of myself mentally by reading books that centered on personal growth and following steps to keep my thoughts positive, such as reciting positive affirmations and being more aware of my negative thoughts so I can reframe my thinking patterns.

    Taking care of my mind and body really helped me see myself differently. When I felt more comfortable in my skin and more at ease in my own mind, my self-confidence grew.

    2. I stopped worrying about what people thought.

    I had always been shy and introverted, and I was afraid of being judged. Being in college helped me break out of that shell. I spoke up in class and asked questions. I stopped worrying what people would think about me because I knew this was holding me back. My entire focus centered on what I wanted to learn and get from the classes I took.

    My best friend at the time told me that I should walk with my head up and back straight. She taught me that with my shoulders back and my head held high, I’d appear confident, and when I felt confident, no one’s opinions could hurt me. I adopted that form, and believe me, it felt great to walk with extremely good posture and feel the confidence exude from within me.

    3. I focused on the positive.

    Being positive had always been hard. I would wallow in self-pity and then wonder why I didn’t have many friends or couldn’t get a date. I changed my mindset and focused on the good things in my life and positive changes I wanted to make.

    I spent a lot of time with my son and worked on my writing skills, because being a writer was very important to me, and still is! I learned everything I could about business management and continuously developed my skills. I also started hanging out with positive people with healthy self-esteem and emulated their free spirit and vivacious personalities. Spending time around people who see the world through a positive, empowering lens has helped switch my mindset and feel better about myself and life.

    4. I started smiling more.

    By smiling more, I felt positive and happy more often. I wanted people to view me as someone approachable and friendly, so I smiled and showed my courtesy to those around me. It’s amazing what a smile can do for yourself as well for others. Smiling at someone in passing could touch that person and ease whatever pain they’re enduring. It could brighten their day and, and in turn help you feel good about yourself.

    When I was on my way to work one day, after picking up a hot chocolate at a nearby food court, I walked down a few steps toward the exit. An unkempt man entered and held the door open for me. I flashed him a smile and thanked him. He did a doubletake and then smiled hesitantly at me. It was then that I realized the power of a smile. It made me feel good to acknowledge this man because of a courteous gesture on his part.

    By being kind and grateful, I shared a moment with a complete stranger and it felt good.

    5. I found the courage to be myself.

    After practicing the steps above, I was no longer afraid to be myself. I broke out of my comfort zone and even spoke in public at church and seminars I took. Being myself freed me from living in a shell, where the walls I had built at a young age came crashing down.

    Today, my skin color no longer bothers me. I still hate my hair, but that’s beside the point. The fact is I realized that it wasn’t my skin color that was stopping me from making friends and finding love. It was me all along. I need to love and take care of myself first before anyone else could love me.

    I now have a wonderful, gorgeous husband who treats me the way I’ve always wanted to be treated by a man. He values me and loves everything about me—flaws and all!

    Exercising these five strategies created a life for me that I’m quite proud of. In retrospect, I wish I could tell my teenage self that life will get better, just be patient, and enjoy your naturally built-in tan.

    I’m proud to be half black and white. It is a blend of both my parents, who I love very much. Without them, I wouldn’t be the woman I am today.

    Life Is Not a Race: Why We’ll Never Find Happiness in the Future

    Almost all of my adult life I’ve competed in the extreme sport of white-water kayaking.

    My life revolved around adrenalin and competition.

    Recently, I had a dream I will never forget:

    I was running in a race and I was out in front, winning.

    I got to a point in the course where there were no signposts showing the next turn. So I asked the race officials, “Where is the course?”

    They replied, “We don’t know.”

    The race officials couldn’t tell me where the course went from there because there was no course.

    All of a sudden I stopped running and thought to myself, “There is no race if the officials don’t even know the course.”

    The feelings that followed were first confusion and then a deep sense of relief.

    I thought, “I don’t have to try so hard. I don’t have to win anything. There is no competition. Just stop. You are enough exactly as you are.”

    And then I woke up.

    This dream has stuck with me for weeks, as it feels like the exact message I need.

    Just stop. You are enough. There is no race.

    What if you already had everything you were asking for? What if this was it, and everything you thought you wanted was just an illusion?

    Two weeks ago I got invited to go scuba diving.

    I did my scuba diving certification course fifteen years ago and thought it was kind of boring. There wasn’t enough adrenalin and no competition involved, so I never went again.

    Upon receiving this recent scuba invitation, I took it as sign and said yes.

    Being a beginner at something is humbling. Not knowing what you’re doing. Not being good. Feeling awkward with the equipment.

    It gives the ego a big check to say, “I don’t know. I’m a beginner. Please show me. Please help me.”

    Listening intently as my instructor reviewed all the details I learned fifteen years ago but had forgotten, I felt vulnerable.

    Most of my life I’ve been at the top of my game as an international white-water kayak competitor, and have been the guide for others.

    What’s it like putting the shoe on the other foot?

    Somehow it was great!

    The realization came that I am an absolute beginner not only in scuba diving but in life.

    This new way of living I’ve embraced requires stopping, being authentic, and learning vulnerability.

    How does this feel?

    Actually, liberating!

    I did my scuba review and absolutely loved it. I was buzzing. The thrill of a new experience and the learning curve of being a beginner was exponential.

    After two real dives in the ocean I was hooked.

    This is what my there is no race dream was showing me!

    The point of scuba diving is to go slowly, see as much as possible, remain calm, breathe, and relax. There is no winner except who has the best time in his or her own experience.

    Under water, it feels like a meditation, no chatting or ego involved. Taking in the beautiful colors, swimming with amazing fish, and experiencing a whole new world was intoxicating.

    Two weeks later I got invited to go again. We did four amazing dives in a world-class dive site in Bali. It was so unbelievably amazing. I asked myself, “How did I get here?”

    I got there by letting everything else go. Embracing an entirely new way of interacting with the world, and with myself. Questioning everything I ever viewed as worthy.

    Three years ago I packed up my life in New Zealand and sold or gave away everything, even my kayaks.

    I decided to say yes to the unknown, landing me in a whole new life in Bali.

    No extreme sports, no adrenalin, no competition; my new life here is about saying yes to everything I never thought I was.

    Going slowly, practicing mindfulness through yoga, meditation, and dance, learning how to speak Indonesian, and now scuba diving, my life looks like something I never in a million years would have guessed it would be.

    I am finding joy in the little things, learning how to be in the moment, and realizing all that I thought was important isn’t.

    There is no race.

    The Western collective consciousness teaches us that when we get to the end of something, then we will be happy, whole, complete, and successful.

    When we graduate from high school or college, when we get married, when we have kids, when we get the dream job, then life will really be rolling.

    We’re constantly chasing a carrot on a stick that’s always just out of reach.

    When we reach the milestone that we thought was our golden key to happiness, the feeling of satisfaction is fleeting.

    So we think, “Okay, well I did that, and it didn’t quite bring me the happiness I was thinking it would, so maybe it was just a stepping stone. Maybe when xyz happens, that will make me happy. That will be the real win.”

    This elusive state of contentment is always around the next corner. We’re racing toward something that will never give us what we’re hoping for.

    The only way to truly win this race of life is to realize there is no race.

    Winning is stopping. Going within. Finding happiness within yourself.

    True satisfaction can only be found inside.

    When we can be alone with ourselves, be at peace, and feel a deeper connection, this is what we have really been racing to find.

    Running toward the next accomplishment will never be able to provide this.

    It will only take us further away from what we’re hoping to feel.

    So what happens when we stop?

    It involves going deeper within, which can be a scary prospect for many.

    Choosing to constantly be on the go is easier. It dulls the pain.

    It means not having to really take a look at yourself. A superficial sense of satisfaction comes from feeling you have accomplished a lot.

    Adrenaline can be a drug, providing a temporary rush.

    Why do you have to accomplish things to be worthy? Are you reliant on completing tasks so that your life can feel some sense of purpose? What if by just being present and showing up consciously you were living your purpose?

    What if instead of feeling constant pressure and anxiety, you could just be with what you were doing in the moment you were doing it?

    Our thoughts are rarely focused on where we are.

    They’re in the past, wishing we could change it, or in the future, creating false outcomes that will never usually come to fruition.

    Both of these thought patterns are actually a form of insanity, and not based in reality.

    The past is over. There is nothing we can do to change it.

    The future will never come. Reality is always the moment we are in right now.

    We can only truly live by stopping the race of the mind to the imagined future—by living in presence. By waking up from the dream that there is something out there that will bring satisfaction, turning inward, and taking responsibility for our lives.

    Realizing there is no race means finding contentment right here and now.

    Quit running and find that what you have been searching for has been right here all along.

    Start by creating small gaps in your schedule. Start small at first. Get places a few minutes early.

    Before getting out of the car or leaving the house, consciously pause.

    Try fitting fewer things into your day. Less is more!

    Do one thing at a time.

    When you eat, be present with your food. Enjoy it, really taste it, see it, smell it, savor it.

    Turn off the TV.

    Take a meditation course.

    Notice and be grateful for the small things.

    Instead of focusing on what you don’t have, focus on the many things you do have.

    Life’s finish line will come one day for us all. Learning how to truly live means we will get to that finish line with a smile in our heart and contentment in our being.

    This is the ultimate win. It requires nothing from outside and everything from inside. There is nowhere to go, nothing to achieve, nothing to prove, and nothing to do.

    All it requires is stopping and refocusing priorities; cultivating awareness by slowing down the race of the mind.

    Creating space to be, and valuing ourselves as enough right here and now, requires an inner commitment and unplugging.

    Contentment is currently available in abundance; we just need to stop long enough to feel it.

    Life Isn’t a Race: Allow Yourself to Be Happy in the Present

    At an early age I learned that nothing in life is guaranteed. When I was eleven years old, a close friend and classmate lost his battle with cancer. After that, I had several more instances of losing loved ones, some expected, others not so much.

    After having gone through so much loss at such an early age, my outlook on life was one word: rushed.

    I wanted to get through college as fast as I could, while taking on as much as I could. I wanted to have meaningful relationships and foster my athletic abilities. I wanted to get out into the real world and have a great job where I felt like I mattered, and made a difference.

    I had graduated college a semester early, and I was blindsided by how seemingly cold the real world was and by the fact that I had all of these dreams with little to no understanding as to how they were going to come to fruition—as fast as possible.

    After all, time was of the essence because I could die tomorrow, or the day after that, or the day after that… (What twenty-something year olds think like that?)

    With the economy on the decline, I was only able to find a job at a nearby hospital as a transportation aide. This basically entailed bringing patients to and from their appointments within the hospital.

    While I did enjoy certain aspects of this job, such as trying to make each and every person I transported smile during their otherwise not-so-great day, the attitudes of fellow hospital staff left me feeling worthless, as I was mocked by physicians and nurses for no other reason than my job title.

    As months crept on, I became seriously devastated at the thought of my future success being delayed any further. It was hard to feel like success was on the horizon when those who were supposed to be my “teammates” were treating me so poorly.  I was genuinely distraught over the uncertainty of what tomorrow was going to bring.

    I tried my very best to trudge on, with the sole thought and hope that “surely another career wouldn’t be like this, right?”

    About six months later I was offered a different job. It wasn’t exactly like my previous one, but left me feeling once again like I was on another rollercoaster ride, this time with a healthcare consulting company.

    When I was offered this position that would have me relocating to Pennsylvania, I packed my bags as quickly as I could. I seized the moment, not knowing when another opportunity would present itself.

    In this position I had effectively transitioned from a job that required direct interaction with patients, to a role that was focused on how hospitals and medical groups financially managed themselves.

    While my previous critics during my time as a transportation aide would have deemed this job title more favorable, this consulting position did not leave me feeling any better at the end of the day.   

    Now, I was boots-on-the-ground implementing change within an organization, with one major problem: my boss was one of the most despised people at the hospital.

    This left me putting out fires at every turn, and put me in a position where I felt forced to back certain causes I didn’t truly believe in because I was told to “step up, or step out,” by the management within the consulting company.

    During this time, I was spending ten to twelve hours a day at work, getting nothing more in return than feeling emotionally and mentally drained at the day’s end.

    While I did have a small group of friends in the area, I wasn’t close to any of them, as this group of individuals primarily focused on surface-level relationships and drinking.

    To fill any remaining time I had available to me, I began training for an Olympic distance triathlon.

    More or less, I threw all of the things that I felt I needed to achieve to feel happy in life up in the air, hoping at least one would catch, but none of them did.

    My failure in this approach was that I was running—not just in a “hey, I’m training for an Olympic distance triathlon” kind of way, but in an “oh-my-gosh, I’m terrified to leave any amount of time free because if I truly take a step back and look at my life, I will realize how unhappy I am and how unimportant all of this is” kind of way.

    I was cramming my days so full in an attempt to truly experience the world like my other friends and family members never had the chance to, and in doing this, I wasn’t actually experiencing anything at all.

    I didn’t know who I was, and I most certainly didn’t know what I wanted.

    Fast forward a year and a half and here I am, now located in Boise, Idaho, where I have relinquished “striving for happiness,” because happiness is not something you strive for.

    When I moved to Idaho for another job opportunity, I decided not to fill all my downtime like I had in the past.

    At first, I felt truly and utterly alone. Things were quiet, and it became apparent that in trying to experience everything around me and check items off of my bucket list, I had neglected to cope with several past experiences.

    The loss of loved ones, the ending of relationships, and past decisions that did not suit me all haunted me in my downtime.

    Through counseling and deep self-reflection over the past several months, I have been able to resolve many of these feelings and have learned, among other things, that happiness is something that already lies within us.

    It is a personal choice, however, whether or not we allow ourselves to feel it.

    I believe happiness is choosing to let go of those situations and people who do not suit us personally. It is living in the moment, rather than, in my case, living in fear that the moment is going to be over before I’m ready.

    It is here that I have allowed myself to only invest time in what truly interests and suits me, rather than what I feel obligated to achieve.

    I have made time to enjoy exercising, to cherish my family and friends, to read and write, and to enjoy the simplicity of life rather than stress over all of life’s complexities. In realizing how much I have missed while running from my past and planning far into the future, I have become truly present.

    We all have the ability to enjoy our lives, but it can’t happen if we’re racing toward the future. If we want to be happy, we have to choose to create happiness now.

    Every Day Can Be A Starting Point: Make a New Beginning

    Birthdays. They’re supposed to be a joyous celebration, right?

    That one special day each year when we throw a party and reflect on the day our amazing journey began.

    The starting point.

    I’ve had quite a colorful journey and certainly enjoyed many wonderful birthdays in my life.

    Turning 50 this past year wasn’t one of them. Here’s why.

    When we’re little every birthday marks a major accomplishment. We learn to walk. Then we learn to talk. Then we go to school and learn our ABCs.

    Everything is brand new.

    When we graduate high school they tell us we have our whole lives in front of us. Whether we’re off to college, exploring the world, or entering the work force, we begin a whole new chapter. Independence.

    A starting point.

    You can just picture that open highway stretched out to infinity before you, beckoning to a future somewhere out on that horizon that calls you to adventure. All that you will become lies out there.

    In my twenties, I was a freewheeling single young man touring the world with rock stars. How bad can that be, right?

    Turning 30 was awesome too! I was living in sunny Southern California, playing music, and making records in recording studios. Life was good.

    Even 40 was great. I had moved back to New York to play in my own band and got married. Our life together had just begun. Then came children. I became Dad.

    A starting point.

    But 50?

    You’re supposed to have accomplished your greatest life’s work by now, right? Achieved all your major goals. Changed the world. (more…)
