    How This Dog Person Learned to Embrace Her Inner Cat

    Earlier this year, I went to Egypt with a small group of friends.

    “Egypt will activate something ancient in you,” I was told by one of them. “You have to go.”

    Egypt wasn’t exactly on my bucket list, but in the span of one year, three different people had told me I needed to visit the country, so when the opportunity presented itself, I did.

    The trip was organized by one of my favorite mystics, who thoughtfully designed it around the individual healing needs of everyone in our small group. She determined which temples were most meaningful for each one of us to experience; which acupuncture treatments to administer and when; which Egyptian oils to dab on specific pressure points; which non-religious prayers and rituals to incorporate; and which elder would accompany us and bestow her ancient wisdom and shamanic healing practices along the way.

    For a woman like me on an unconventional healing journey, this was all too good to pass up.

    Almost five years prior, my twelve-year-old son unexpectedly passed away, and I subsequently embarked on a journey to heal my broken heart. I considered talk therapy and prescriptions, but given the alarming rise in depression, anxiety, and mental illness across our country, I didn’t have faith they could help me fast or deep enough. So I fell back on my entrepreneurial ways, relied on instinct, and searched for alternative ways to treat my soul.

    But I wasn’t looking for Egypt. Egypt found me.

    Before committing, I told some friends, “I’m not a group person. I shouldn’t go on this trip.”

    “What do you mean?” they asked.

    “I’m better one-on-one or with just a small group of three or four friends at a time. I can do larger groups—like at an event or party—but I usually end up in the corner talking to someone about something I find meaningful and then sneaking out after a couple of hours.”

    She nodded as if she could relate.

    “Maybe it’s because I’m terrible at small talk and uncomfortable with superficial conversations,” I continued. Or maybe it’s because the energy of so many people in one place at one time overwhelms me.  I can’t imagine traveling with a group of ten people and being surrounded by conversation and activity all day long without time to rejuvenate by myself.”

    My friends assured me I’d be fine.

    The group was hand curated. Everyone was healing from some sort of trauma or heartache and would have plenty of time every day to process the experience on their own. Plus, they reminded me that the benefits of reigniting the ancient Egyptian magic within my soul far outweighed any silly old insecurities and self-imposed policies about group dynamics.

    The evening I landed in Cairo and attended the group’s orientation meeting, however, I already regretted my decision. “Egypt is all about our shadows,” the wise elder in our group announced.

    Huh?” I thought to myself. I didn’t come all the way to Egypt to explore what Carl Jung once termed the “unacceptable” parts of myself.

    As if the elder could hear my confusion, she elaborated, “The lightness and darkness of this country will bring out the lightness and darkness in you.” 

    I looked around at the other group members seated on both sides of me and figured she must have been talking to them. I had already been through my darkest hour. There couldn’t possibly be more.

    When I remembered that our thoughts create our reality, I suppressed my concerns and invited Egypt to light up the ancient goddess within me that was surely clamoring to be freed.

    For the next few days, Egypt humored me. We saw temples. We cruised down the Nile. I even formed some new friendships. The group thing wasn’t so bad.

    Maybe I’m over it, I thought. After all, I had been on an extended healing journey for nearly five years, and it was certainly possible that old insecurities had been quietly addressed during this transformation process that life had chosen for me.

    Just when I started feeling optimistic, however, Egypt suddenly turned.  

    After entering Edfu Temple after sundown, I felt a cold stream of air brush across my neck while the ancient stone I was standing on wobbled and threw me off balance. I spun around, thinking someone had approached me from behind, but didn’t see anyone within a hundred feet of me. I glanced down, tapped on the stone beneath my feet, and noticed its ancientness was more solid and stable than any modern-day masonry.

    Either I had hallucinated the entire experience, or an old Egyptian spirit within the temple walls was playing tricks on me. I convinced myself of the latter and ventured over to some other group members to tell them all about it.

    An hour later, I suddenly felt queasy and plunged into a darkness that caused me to spiral for the next five days. Grief oozed out of every pore in my body while old insecurities screamed for attention like raw nerves.  I had no idea what was happening or why.

    The worse I felt, the more I noticed other group members huddling, laughing, posing for photos, and sharing all the “JOY” that Egypt was excavating from their souls.

    Are you kidding me? I thought. They’re all receiving Egypt’s magic, and I’m the one left in the dark?

    I knew I should not have gone on this trip. I also knew there couldn’t be something wrong with all of them. The issue had to be me.

    So, I began to do what groups always made me do…I drifted to the periphery and tried to isolate. But Egypt would not let me.

    Every time I turned around, there was a cat by my side.

    “I keep attracting cats,” I complained to a woman in our group who happened to be sitting next to me when a cat started rubbing up against my right leg.

    As much as I wasn’t a group person, I was even less of a cat person.

    “What other cats have you attracted?” she asked, her sparkly brown eyes eagerly searching mine.

    “One sat between my feet at breakfast the other day. Another brushed up against me during lunch.  There was even one sitting and purring right next to me on an interior temple wall.”

    “It’s strange,” I continued, “because since my eldest son passed away, gray and white cats are often in my dreams at night and show up in random places.”

    “Like where?” she asked.

    “A few years back, a random kitten jumped on me while I was in a lounge chair next to my husband and started kissing my face and purring. More recently, I had to go to the Emergency Room and when I went outside at 2 a.m. to get some air by myself, a little gray cat walked over and sat next to me.”

    “What did you do?” she asked.

    “I went back inside the hospital.”

    “Pay attention,” she said with a subtle wink.

    “Why?”

    “Cats are nudging you.”

     “I’m a dog lover,” I explained. “Not a cat person.”

    “Well,” she responded like the mystic I soon learned she was, “Cats are trying to tell you something, and you might want to figure out what that is.”

    “Like what?” I asked, genuinely curious.

    “What do cats represent to you?” she asked.

    I had never thought about it. I never owned a cat. I never played with a cat. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever really known any cat.

    “Cats are disloyal,” I answered. “They run away. They don’t play. And they scratch people. Dogs are better.”

    “That’s not true!” she screeched. “Cats are amazing animals too!”

    “Why are they amazing?” I asked, genuinely curious.

    “What you describe as disloyal, I would call independent,” she reasoned. “Cats don’t operate in herds like dogs. They are not designed to be in groups for too long and are quite comfortable being on their own. There’s nothing wrong with that.”

    “Well, cats don’t play,” I pressed on. “Dogs play and are a lot more fun.”

    “Cats are very playful! she corrected me. “Unlike dogs, who are more needy and constantly flop all over us to get our attention, cats play hard for a few hours at a time and then sneak off to refuel. They know who they are and take care of themselves.”

    I felt a big teaching moment unfolding.

    “Cats are also very mystical creatures,” she added. “They hold feminine energy, so they are highly intuitive about others and extremely protective. You can’t fool a cat. If you try, they will lash out and scratch you. They have no problem protecting themselves.”

    Her words spun around in my head and unlocked new self-awareness.

    I’m independent. I play in spurts. I’m highly intuitive. I don’t like being in groups for too long. I dedicate a lot of time for self-care….

    “Oh no,” I looked up at her and whispered.

    “What?” she leaned in, fully prepared for what I was about to say.

    “I think I have cat energy.”

    She gently touched my arm and channeled some divine wisdom of her own “You do have cat energy,” she replied. “You may love dogs, but you are a cat and should learn to love your own kind too.”

    I started laughing.

    “The one animal I’ve liked the least my entire life is the one I am most like,” I realized in disbelief. I felt lighter and lighter by the second and could tell the spirit of Egypt was pleased.

    When I got back to the hotel, I called my best friend from college. For as long as I could remember, she had been giving me cat cards on my birthday, while I reciprocated the joke by giving the cards of her least favorite pet…dogs.

    “How’s the trip?” she asked.

    “Challenging…but I am calling to tell you about a life-changing moment I had today for the both of us.”

    “Great!” she responded enthusiastically.

    I relayed the entire story and could barely contain myself when I said, “Here’s the best part!”

    “What?” she asked.

    “You, my dear friend…”

    “Oh, no!” she cried out.

    “Oh, yes!” I responded, reminding her that a cat would never lie. “The animal you’ve been the most uncomfortable around and have liked the least your entire life is the one you are most like!”

    I heard silence on the other end of the line.

    “Think about it. You are the floppy one who always likes company. You get restless when you’re alone for too long. And you would play all day long if you could.”

    We were laughing so hard we had to hang up.

    The next morning, I woke up feeling liberated. I embraced my catlike ways and plugged back into the group, slinking in and out as I pleased.

    Everyone welcomed me back with open arms and reminded me that dog energy is incredibly inviting and forgiving. It’s no wonder I have so many dog-like friends in my life teaching me new tricks.

    While I still don’t own or even really know a single cat, I now embody the one I am. As a result, I’ve discovered that the more I accept my natural ways, the more accepting I am of the ways of others.

    Cats no longer intimidate me. Neither do groups. And while I’m still a dog lover, I’ve given up the exhausting effort of trying to be one.

    You do not have to travel all the way to Egypt to learn this lesson for yourself.

    Just look in the mirror. You may find that the traits you like the least about others are often the ones most like yourself.

    How to Create Happiness Outside of a Relationship and Enjoy More of Your Life

    For many years I was single. But I wasn’t just a regular single, I was a miserable one.

    Rather than enjoying a time in my life when I didn’t have to care about anyone else but myself and using it to devote my full attention to my purpose and passions, I chose to ride the “woe is me” train.

    I would complain about being single daily and covet other women’s “luck” in dating. I would blame every guy I dated for “just not being ready,” or somehow else at fault.

    I didn’t realize I was the common denominator in all my failed relationship attempts.

    I was the one who chose to spend time with these men and ignore the big red flags that would crystalize themselves early on.

    Instead of taking time to patiently vet and reject men that were not good for me, I allowed my desperation to entertain any man that would show interest.

    My inability to find happiness outside of a relationship was ultimately what kept me single.

    The saying you attract what you are” was true in my case. I was miserable single, so I kept attracting miserable relationships. 

    I continued down the same path until I decided that something needed to change.

    I realized that I had outsourced the job of making me happy to the many men that I dated.

    Their presence, their commitment, and their interest in me would determine how happy I was. Unfortunately, due to my questionable taste in romantic partners, that would often mean not so happy. So, I decided it was time to change that.

    That is when things started to shift, and I called in the life and love that I wanted. Here is what I did to find happiness outside of a relationship:

    Dealing with the Absence of a Relationship

    One thing I have learned is that in the absence of a romantic relationship I had to find fulfilling activities that made me happy.

    When you are single you have a lot of time. Time to think about everything you feel is missing.

    I would spend my evenings watching romantic movies on Hallmark wishing my life were like the plotline of the movie.

    And more often than not, all it did was make me more miserable. So, I decided to utilize that free time in the evening in a better way.

    I came up with a beautiful nighttime routine that included coloring, listening to music, and reading a book on spirituality or personal growth.

    I would fill the void with activities that filled me up.

    Same for the morning times. Instead of lying in bed and scrolling through Instagram until all I saw were couples and babies, I started running.

    Not only did I get into the best shape of my life because of it, but I also discovered a new passion for running and working out that quickly turned into a hobby I’m now passionate about.

    By dealing with the absence of a relationship head-on I found activities that made me happy.

    Dealing with the Sadness of Singleness

    The second thing I did to find happiness outside of a relationship was learn to deal with the sadness that singleness often brings with it.

    It’s no secret that being single can suck.

    No matter how often single people are made to believe that being single is a blessing, it can be hard to see it when that blessing seems to last forever.

    What I have learned is that rather than avoiding, suppressing, and denying the sadness, I had to learn to embrace it.

    I needed to allow the ebbs and flows to pan out accordingly. By deeply feeling the sadness and despair, I also enabled myself to feel the joy and excitement that followed after.

    Reminding yourself that no emotion lasts forever, and that you will eventually overcome it, is the light at the end of the tunnel that keeps you going.

    Therefore, you must make it a habit to tune into your inner well-being daily. Here are three ways I do it:

    1. Start your mornings with a meditation practice that centers you and puts you in tune with how you are really feeling.

    2. Start journaling your thoughts to better understand your fears and worries. You can commit a few minutes in the morning or evening to it.

    3. Commit to a daily gratitude exercise. Multiple times throughout the day, stop what you are doing and simply list three to five things you are grateful for. They can be as simple things as your home, furniture, or the body parts that serve you well.

    There are many different habits that you can choose from. The only thing that matters is that you create a safe space and routine that allows you to feel your emotions without judging them.

    This will help you deal with the sadness of singleness.

    Dealing with the Uncertainty of Dating

    The last thing I had to learn in order to find happiness outside of a relationship was how to navigate through the dating space without feeling burned out or discouraged.

    Dating nowadays feels like you are entering the twilight zone. With many different terms and stages describing the act of dating, many people are not sure what they are doing anymore.

    Are you dating, hanging out, hooking up, or maybe just “chilling”?

    If you don’t know, chances are you are stressed by the uncertainty. And that feeling of anxiety sucks.

    It’s a constant ride on a roller coaster of emotions controlled by the other person.

    So, how can you learn to deal with the uncertainty that dating oftentimes brings with it?

    The first step is to increase your self-esteem and remind yourself that your relationship status does not determine your worth.

    When a romantic relationship does not progress the way you want, you may feel discouraged and disappointed. These feelings are valid and should be honored; however, you have to remember that they are only feelings. That means they will pass.

    Instead, use affirmations to build yourself up daily and celebrate all your minor successes, the positive impact you have on the people around you, and how far you’ve come as a person. This will help you remember all the great qualities you bring to a relationship and will be a blessing to the person you are with in the future.

    The second step is to focus on the fun.

    In a world of billions of people, it may take some time to find the one person you would like to spend the rest of your life with, who happens to want the same.

    Uncertainty is part of the dating process. Rather than shying away from it, try to focus on the fun of dating. Meet people without any expectations and instead decide to just have a good time and enjoy their company.

    By doing that, you will naturally feel less anxious, because you are not trying to control your date’s experience, only your own.

    Because of today’s societal pressure to be boo’d up by a certain age, it can often feel depressing when you are not in a committed relationship. Which then leads to unhappiness.

    However, by taking matters into your own hands and deciding to create happiness for yourself, you allow yourself to experience life and live in the present moment.

    Stop Over-Depending on Others and Seeking Their Approval: How to Set Yourself Free

    I got a week off of work recently to spend with myself, which is always a wonderfully centering experience for me. I’m an introvert, so I love my alone time. But as I took the time to introspect about some relationships in my life, my Zen-like vacation mindset disappeared.

    It had happened again, and my mood alternated between mad and depressed all weekend. You see, sometimes I turn into a puppet.

    You probably know the feeling, even if you’re not sure what I’m talking about yet.

    There’s a sense of being a little out of control of your life, powerful emotions pulling you in different directions, a nagging sense of worry that never lets up, and losing your grip on that sense of who you are and what’s important to you. That’s my least favorite part—the loss of identity.

    For me, these feelings come from becoming overly emotionally dependent on others, usually particular relationships in my life. For many others, and maybe for you, it might not be so specific. The dependency might be spread out over your peers, friends, coworkers, or parents.

    What is Over-Dependency?

    Let’s start out with this: dependency is not a weakness. It’s actually healthy, as long as you can keep it balanced with independence.

    We all need to be taken care of, validated, encouraged, and given support. When we can receive these things from others and use them to nurture our spirits, this is healthy dependency. When we draw strength from these experiences, it allows us to more easily be independent at other times—relying on and caring for ourselves, and being the one to support others.

    This is called interdependence, and it’s a beautiful ebb and flow in relationships of both giving and being able to receive. As social as we human beings are, this is pretty necessary for our survival. The instincts for it run deep in our nature.

    Over-dependency is when you find yourself struggling to return to emotional independence when needed. For me, this involves a lot of worry and obsessing over what someone else thinks of me.

    It feels like an intense need for someone’s approval, otherwise I’m not okay or enough. Sometimes it comes out as continuous attempts to prove myself, or be perfect, or seek compliments. Other times, I give up too early or avoid people who I feel may never approve of me.

    You might see it in others—you know, those genuinely great people in your life who never admit to being good enough.

    When we try so hard to constantly please someone else, we start to become unreal. Over-dependency gives us feelings of emptiness, inadequacy, loss, confusion, and insignificance. We feel unreal not because we don’t matter to others, but because we are making ourselves fake.

    Where Does It Come From?

    This varies for different people. Maybe it was the way you were parented, or being bullied in school. How about becoming a teenager and suddenly feeling the cultural pressure to be a model/genius/super-star? Maybe it was being treated badly in a romantic relationship.

    Mine comes from an abusive relationship I experienced several years ago. My abuser was highly psychologically manipulative, cornering me into compliance with threats, insults, intimidation, blaming, guilt tripping, shaming, and praise.

    He praised me highly when I did what he wanted and attacked my self-worth when I did not. I learned to feel fear and anxiety any time he wasn’t happy because I knew it meant I was at risk for being told that I was unlovable and inadequate.

    It was highly victimizing to know that my worth in his eyes was conditional and dependent on how I made him feel, rather than being recognized as a valuable human being with my own needs and emotions.

    Becoming a puppet was a way to try and protect my little scrap of self-esteem.

    But when I left and cut ties with him, I didn’t realize my puppet strings were still trailing behind me. My victim mentality followed me into other areas of life, and it has taken great courage and a lot of practice to learn how to take it off and let my self-worth stand on its own again.    

    Whatever your own experience, over-dependence usually happens when we try to rely on someone in a healthy way and get hurt instead of being supported. Our instincts kick in, and we try new strategies, looking for ways to get the love we need and avoid the hurt.

    But the more we try, the more we tend to lose sight of ourselves. Slowly, we start trading our unique face for a closet of masks and a set of puppet strings. It’s a cheap trade in the end because we only get temporary approval where we needed unconditional acceptance and love.

    Ways to Ease Back into Interdependence

    Pinocchio: “Don’t hurt him, Jiminy. He’s my best friend.”

    Jiminy Cricket: [outraged] “Your best friend? And what am I? Just your conscience? Okay! That settles it!”

    1. Let your conscience be your guide.

    Listen to the small voice inside you. It’s our warning for when things are becoming unhealthy. Be aware of yourself and how you start to act and feel when you’re wrapped up in pleasing others. Think honestly about how you’ve been caring for yourself lately.

    2. Get some distance.

    Try spending some time with yourself to see if it clears your head. It’s also a good way to mentally check your relationships. The healthy people in your life will give you space when you need it, then be glad to see you return.

    If you don’t do this often they might express concern, but in a way that isn’t blaming, guilt tripping, or desperate. This helps you realize you are a real boy, after all. Maybe you don’t need those puppet strings.

    3. Give yourself love.

    Others aren’t the only ones who can fulfill your need for love. In fact, if you don’t love yourself, you might have a hard time accepting or feeling like you deserve their love.

    Take some time to really accept yourself. When you do this, there’s no need to tell fibs and watch your nose grow just to be loved. Yes, you are flawed; this makes you no less lovable. You deserve time, attention, care, acceptance, appreciation, honesty, and gentleness. Take a weekend to give yourself these things.

    4. Give others love.

    Strangely, over-dependency becomes highly self-focused. I’ve found the easiest and warmest way to slip back into the ebb and flow of interdependence is to give in small ways to other people around me, without expecting anything back.

    This is different from being a puppet, where I’m dancing around just for the sake of earning some cheap affection.

    Gently release those puppet strings and make your own decisions about how you want to interact with people. When I’m focused on giving, it’s also easier to recognize when others are trying to give to me. Then you can accept it back with gratitude.
